  • Worship & Music Ministry | 2017 1st Choir Mission Trip

2017 1st Choir Mission Trip Sing, Choirs of Angels Justin Cheong Most know what sawadee ka means (it’s Thai for “hello”, for those who don’t) , and that’s probably the extent of our knowledge of the Thai language. So, can you imagine the choir member’s reactions when we learned we had to sing – and memorise! – not one but three full Christmas carols in Thai? Chow lok tung lai chen jai yin dee mee pra ra cha pra soot etc. What?! It was Greek (well, Thai) to us! That was just one of the many hurdles the PLMC Choir had to surmount before embarking on its first mission trip – yes, the choir’s first mission trip in the history of PLMC. At the beginning of 2017, God prompted W & M director Susanna and choir conductor Eng Wah to suggest that that should be the year for the choir’s first-ever mission trip. After five months of preparations with a church that was interested in having us for Christmas 2017, plans fell through, to our great disappointment, and time was running out. But when the Lord closes a door, somewhere He opens a window. Through the church missions committee, we were blessed to get in touch with PLMC missionary Boonchiaw, who put us in touch with God Is Good Church in Chonburi, Thailand. To our relief (and amusement), he ended all his responses to our questions and requests with “No problem!” – truly, this is a man who leaves everything in the hands of God. In the remaining months – up until the day before we departed on 30 Nov 2017 – we prayed fervently and got to work on our musical entitled “Christmas, Cookies and Angels” : We wrote a script from scratch (thanks to my sister Amy) ; obtained and adapted anglicised Thai lyrics through choir member Irene, whose daughter runs an orphanage in Chiang Mai; got the entire musical translated into Thai with the help of Tee Lertpalanunt, a missionary with YWAM Chiang Mai; hunted high and low from Amazon and Tao Bao to Mustafa Centre for the perfect pageant costumes and accessories; and practiced, practiced, practiced. Meanwhile, God had plans to expand our initial intent of ministering to the modestly-sized congregation at God Is Good Church: Without telling us, Boon chiaw had included us in the programme for a large rally to be held outside a shopping mall in Chonburi. We were excited yet apprehensive. Would there be a sound system? Would there be a screen to project a translation of our musical? Would we melt in the heat in our costumes? So many questions, yet only one answer from Boon chiaw: “No problem!” You may also like Share Testimony 1962 Methodist Youth Fellowship Talentime Missions Worship & Music Ministry In the end, God, who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all the we ask or think (Ephesians 3:20), provided: The professional sound system was of concert quality, and manned by experts; the huge LED screen behind us projecting Thai translations ensured that everyone watching understood us; and hundreds were entertained, touched and blessed by the Christmas message. The same happened in the cosy hall of God Is Good Church (where the congregation couldn’t stop weeping during our time of ministry) and at another performance we gave outside a shopping mall in Pattaya. The latter was a last-minute surprise (courtesy of No-problem Boon chiaw) and the venue had no screen to project the Thai translation. But, thanks be to God, many of the audience members were tourists who understood English and were moved all the same. At the end of the trip, we agreed unanimously that in His time, God makes all things beautiful, and that this was the start of many more choir missions trips to come. Until our next report, phra jaw way pon – God bless you! Choir member Serene Tan (who played the role of a wise man) says… “I’m in awe of how the Lord turned a disappointing start into such an amazing turn of events with a partnership that was on-the-go. Nothing is impossible! My sense of how things were going to develop was that it would be Spirit-led, and that we had to flow and not be a stumbling block. Praise the Lord, the Committee was willing to go with the flow and allow our Mighty God to orchestrate this amazing trip down to the last-minute inclusion of Pattaya! Hallelujah! The Holy Spirit was present as we did our prayer walk through Chonburi Central. The presence was so strong when we were singing “Emmanuel" that I had goose bumps, and I noticed some audience members wiping away their tears. The word “favour” seems to resonate with me that the Christian Community in Chonburi has the favour of the Lord upon it. He is pleased!” You may also like Share Testimony 1962 Methodist Youth Fellowship Talentime Missions Worship & Music Ministry

  • WSCS | 1987 WSCS Beginnings: Centennial Service

1987 WSCS Beginnings: Centennial Service The Line of Splendour At the Centennial Year Celebration of Methodist Women's Work in Singapore, the General Conference Women's Society of Christian Service presented "The Line of Splendour". 1) Introduction - Mrs Tan Beng Leong, Kathleen 2) Finance - Mrs Rosie Leong 3) Education - Mrs Tan Boon Hak 4) Mission Outreach - Mrs Sylvia Kho 5) Social Concerns - Mrs Clara Prabhu Das 6) Future Plans – Mrs Tan Beng Leong, Kathleen which traced the History of Methodist Women through the century -- 1887–1987 at our Centennial Thanksgiving Service at Paya Lebar Methodist Church on 17 January 1987. To commemorate this blessed occasion, the GC WSCS of the Methodist Church in Singapore published a book: Sophia Blackmore in Singapore Educational and Missionary Pioneer, 1887–1927. Selections edited by Theodore R, Doraisamy Bishop of the Methodist Church in Malaysia and Singapore 1974 - 1976. When asked by the editor to comment about the book, our GC WSCS President wrote: Quote: "This book interestingly displays the 'gems' polished by Miss Blackmore at Mount Sophia which sparkle in the homes, the schools and churches today. It is a humbling experience to realize that one woman missionary's sacrifice and perseverance made a breakthrough among conservative families in education and religion." - Mrs Kathleen Tan Beng Leong, President, General Conference Women's Society of Christian Service, Methodist Church in Singapore. At the Centennial Dinner Night two books — "Sophia Blackmore in Singapore" and "Forever Beginning II” were presented to the 1980-84 and 1984-88 GC WSCS Executives and Annual Conference Executives, in appreciation of their dedicated service in the WSCS of their local churches. We thank God for giving our WSCS sisters peace and love with faith. "May God's grace be with all who love our Lord Jesus Christ with undying love." (Ephesians 6:24) You may also like Share Testimony 1987 WSCS Peranakan Night 2007 Vision of Filipino Fellowship WSCS Introduction Methodism's concern for the education of girls and work among women was evident from the very beginning. And so it was in 1887, that Miss Sophia Blackmore was sent to Singapore as a missionary to work among these women and children. And it was through Miss Mary C.Nind's donation to the Women's Foreign Missionary Society that made it possible for Miss Blackmore's appointment. And it was Marie Oldham's obedience to obey the call to go to Singapore when she said to her husband, "If to Singapore we are appointed, to SINGAPORE we will go." Above all, it was the dedication, faith and love of Methodist women that planted this seed of love in Singapore. This then was the beginning of the “LINE OF SPLENDOUR". Miss Sophia Blackmore spent 40 fruitful years of her life in women's work. Her close friend and helper was Mrs Oldham. Together they went knocking at the doors of traditional homes whose daughters were not allowed to go to school. So, they brought education to their doorsteps. They worked amongst the Chinese, Tamil and Malay-speaking women. And God blessed their efforts and soon that seed began to grow and bear fruit in abundance. In the early days, the women of the church happily served and participated in fund-raising projects for their churches. The Chinese-speaking members were called the "Dorcas Society" while the English-speaking, Malay-speaking and Tamil-speaking members were known as the "Ladies Aid Society" which much later was changed to "Women's Society of Christian Service" . When Miss Helen Loomis came to Singapore, she was concerned that the women were working as separate groups in individual churches. She also saw the potential leadership qualities of these various church women. She saw the need to unite these groups in order that they might work together more effectively. So with her wisdom and foresight, she invited the Chinese-speaking, the English-speaking and the Malay-speaking women to come together to her house for "tea" . And there she challenged all present, to unite and work together in God's Kingdom. So the Singapore District Women's Society of Christian Service was born on that memorable afternoon. Miss Helen Loomis helped in the training sessions for the els ladies and she was honoured as the one who helped Asian leadership to blossom. She saw the potential leadership of Wang Kwan Eng and appointed her as full-time Director of Women's Work in the Malaya-Chinese Annual Conference. Miss Hwang together with Mrs Tay Soo Keng helped to conduct Bible Studies and Leadership Training for the women in all the WSCS societies in the Chinese Churches till her retirement. And so the post-war years of leadership grew at local, district and conterence levels. The Singapore Government, recognising the contribution Methodist women made towards education and welfare services, and the growing importance of women in the public life of our country, appointed nine of our Methodist women Justices of Peace, a great honour indeed! They were: Mrs Tan Teng Kim Mrs Ellice Handy Mrs Tay Lian Teck Mrs Evelyn D. Heppel Mrs Elsie Lyne Mrs Goh Kok Kee Mrs Loh Poon Lip Mrs G. Thevathasan Lady Han Hoe Lim By 1965, the Singapore District had 11 WSCS societies. The first President of the newly-organised Singapore District WSCS was Mrs L.C. Loong. Filled with enthusiasm, the District WSCS President and her officers, under the guidance of Miss Loomis set to work and soon 'Singapore District WSCS' became the vibrant organisation, Like Mrs Loong, there were other enthusiastic District WSCS Presidents. They were Mrs E.V. Davies, Mrs Ang Kim Kiat, Mrs Tan Boon Hak, Mrs Rosie Leong, Mrs Tan Beng Leong, Mrs Nana Lim and Mrs Wee Thiam Bock. In 1968, from the Chinese-speaking WSCS, Mrs Teng Ping Ming was elected as the Singapore Unit President of the East Asia Area of the World Federation of Methodist Women. During the Singapore District WSCS Era, there were leadership sessions, spiritual retreats and combined Call to Prayer and Self-Denial worship services in many churches. Other activities helped to encourage the women to come together and to challenge them to grow in their understanding and knowledge of God's love. The 1st President of the Singapore District Chinese WSCS was Miss Fang Chi Geok. The other following presidents were Mrs Chen Teck Mee, Mrs Dora Cheng, Mrs Lam Yew Siong, Mrs Lim Peck Hua, Mrs Moo Chi Nam, Mrs Sim Boon Peng and Mrs Tay Soo Keng. The earlier Singapore missionary leaders in the WSCS were wives of Bishops. They were Mrs Edwin F. Lee, Mrs R.L. Archer, Mrs H.B. Amstutz and Mrs Robert Lundy. Thus challenged, the women grew. They grew in wisdom. They grew in stature. They became aware of the needs within the church. They made great strides in stewardship. 2001 GYM Beginning A Newsletter for the Seniors, by the Seniors Prelude With God's blessing, Singapore has become prosperous and the standard of living has improved, resulting in people having longer life expectancy. However, the unexpected outcome is that in the later years of their lives, many are retired and lead lonely and empty days. In response to this situation, our church has encouraged the formation of a Senior Fellowship which caters to the needs of this group in 1986. Now, it is thought timely that the Senior Fellowship should start a newsletter in "The Beacon" "The Golden Years", which will focus its attention on the needs of this group of people. In this first issue of "The Golden Years", we focus on the Methodist Senior Fellowship in Paya Lebar Methodist Church, the changes it had been through and the new things that are happening recently. The editorial sub-committee welcomes any suggestions or contributions from members of the church which will guide and contribute to the growth of this endeavour. It will be much appreciated if those who have some comments, stories or articles relevant to this group will support this effort and send their Dr N C Tan contributions to Dr N C Tan, care of Miss Teo Soo Hoong of the Church Office. • Filipino Service | 2009 Filipino Fellowship 25th Anniversary

2009 Filipino Fellowship 25th Anniversary 25 Years Of Celebrating God's Faithfulness In 1984, a small group of Filipino domestic helpers began gathering on Sunday mornings for worship, bible study and fellowship while their employers attended the Sunday worship services. Today, the Filipino Fellowship (FF) celebrates its 25th Anniversary. It has grown to about 39 members and they still meet faithfully every Sunday morning. Worshipping the Lord, studying the Word, praying for and having fellowship together has helped the members to grow and support one another spiritually. It has become like a home away from home for the members. The FF is more than just a fellowship group as the members have been equipped to share the gospel and have begun to reach out to their fellow countrymen through regular outreach events. In October 2008, the first batch of cell leader interns completed their training and the first four cell groups held their first cell meeting in March 2009. I thank God for giving me this opportunity to be able to worship Christ together with my countrymen, and at the same time serve in this fellowship. Indeed, I have grown in my spiritual walk and have been nurtured in the way of the Lord. I thank God for Brother Eugene and Sister Jane Kwek, and Sister Poh Chean who have been guiding and counseling us through the many bible study sessions. The love, care and concern that they have shown to us is truly inspired by God. I am truly inspired to continue to serve Him in the next leg of my faith journey when I return home. It is my heartfelt prayer that many more out there will come and join us in this fellowship; that they will experience the joy and love of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, just like I did. My Newfound Family by Babylyn Artiaga May God's abundant blessing be upon you, brothers-and-sisters in Christ! I have been very joyful and very blessed since joining the Filipino Fellowship six years ago. Since I joined the FF, the feelings of homesickness have left me. My home is found in this new "family", this "family" who enthrones Jesus as our Lord and Saviour. Every Sunday, as I come into the Filipino Fellowship family, Jesus will minister to me through the praise and worship songs that I lift up to Him. As I sit at His feet to receive His words, He begins to plough the hard soil and He softens it to make it ready for His imperishable seed to take root. He is the King of my life. I spend quiet time with Him. I meditate on His life-giving Words. Every year, on my annual holiday home visit, without fail. I will speak forth and proclaim His promises to my family members and friends. Praise the Lord that my mother, my nephew and niece are now born again. I came to Singapore to seek economic wealth, but I have found more than wealth - I have found God's treasure. I know that God has called us to fulfill His great commission. I will endeavour to be trained and equipped through this family. I have identified myself with God's Kingdom purpose to be an effective missionary in His reconciliation ministry, wherever He wants to plant me. Glory be to God! My Life As A Christian by Judith Columna My initial years as a young Christian were uneventful. When I began worshipping at PLMC, I began to face more challenges and trials. Ironically, I encountered more troubles as compared to the time before I came to know the Lord. "How could that be??”, I would think to myself. Here I am in trouble and there He was not doing anything to help me. Many times, I would “point” accusing fingers at God for the predicament I was in. However, surprisingly, when Sunday came, I would find myself willingly and happily making my way to meet Him in church. I know that it was He who let me to church when His words were shared, my negative emotions would just melt away. I sensed His tender care, His love, His touch, His peace, His comfort, His embrace in His closeness. Many times I felt guilty as I had conveniently blame Him for my situation. As I sat at His feet and received from Him every Sunday, He began to teach me and show me more of Himself. His words are always true. The scripture I hold fast to is from Psalms 23 and 121 -- “The Lord is my Shepherd and Helper. He watches over me in my coming and going.” As a migrant worker, we face many, many ups and downs in our new situation. We leave our family and country and have to embrace a new culture and new work environment in a new land. We have to adapt quickly within a short period of time. We carry a lot of expectations on our shoulders. I am so grateful that our Lord’s yoke is light. I am so grateful that He has given me a good employer. Not too long ago, I went back to the Philippines. My mother was very sick and we thought we were going to lose her. I asked my mother if she would accept Jesus as her savior. With all her heart she said, "Yes". My mother is still alive today. Although she is bedridden, I continue to trust the Lord for healing for her. The Lord's promise is in Psalms 121, “I lift my eyes to the hills where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord”, also came true when I was desperately in need of money for my mother's medication. A PLMC member, my fellow countryman, blessed me with $200 out of the blue, the exact amount I was praying for. Thank God for His miracle. God never fails to answer my prayer! I want to live a life that is always overflowing with thankfulness and always giving thanks and praises to God. I do not know where He will be planting me next but I will live to serve Him. Without Him, I am nothing. I thank Him for counting me righteous and accepting me as one of His children. I Am Growing In My Faith by Edna Ruiz I had never left the Philippines nor my family before. Coming to Singapore and being separated from my family was very daunting for me. I was filled with so much uncertainty and anxiety. God heard my cries and blessed me with a good employer who is a member of PLMC.Thank you, God, for their kindness and understanding. I have been working with them for the past 8 good years. I am so grateful that, through my employers, I became a part of the Filipino Fellowship. The Fellowship has given me an opportunity to serve in the praise and worship team. I am growing in my faith journey. He is my rock and the source of my strength. I know that God has great plans for all His children. He has put me here in Singapore for a purpose. I will continue to sit at His feet, to receive and grow into His likeness. Praise be to our God. • Ushers' Ministry | 1986 Ushers

1986 Ushers Ushers: God's Hidden Helpers Caroline Tan I look at my watch. It's 9.08 a.m. Uh-oh, I'm late for the Sunday service, I'm not sure if there are any more seats left. As I enter the Sanctuary, the responsive reading is in progress. A cheery smile greets me: "Hello Carol! It's good to see you. How have you been?" It's Seow Yoke, radiating her customary warmth. And not even a word about my tardiness! She sees me comfortably ensconced in a vacant seat and moves off another late-comer under her wing, but first making sure that I knew the correct page of the reading. Seow Yoke is a typical example of a group of highly dedicated individuals whose continued presence is essential to the smooth running of the church. Theirs is a service that is little known and all too often, taken for granted. I'm referring to the ushers of PLMC, without whom our Sunday services would be quite incomplete. Imagine if there were no ushers on hand. We'd have to grope for our own seats. Visitors to the Church would be entirely in the dark. Communion would be in chaos! No one to guide the flow of human traffic to and from the altar. The result would be something akin to an Orchard Road traffic jam at rush-hour! Yet there was a period of PLMC's history when there was no formal team of ushers. That was way back in 1970. Luckily, there were exceptional people such as Mrs. Catherine Chiang and Mrs. R.S. Rasiah who, on their own initiative, took up the task of ushering. Theirs was a pioneering effort that has evolved into a highly effective group of ushers. Under her charge, four teams of ushers were formed (two for the 9 a.m. service and two for the 11 a.m. service). What is a day in the life of an usher like? For one thing, few people realise that ushers perform a very important function in public relations. Consider this - who do you encounter when you first step into the Sanctuary for service? The usher, of course! Contrary to popular belief, first impressions do count a great deal. So when you're met with a joyous greeting first thing in church, chances are, you'll continue your day on a lighter step. The usher's day begins in the morning before each service. They prepare the Sanctuary by laying out the offering bags for the collection of tithes and they cordon off the back row. This is not so much to restrict the congregation's choice of seating as to maintain a semblance of order during the service. As the attendance swells, the ropes are removed accordingly. During combined services when the entire congregation turns out in full force plus friends plus visitors, not a few ushers have been known to give up their seats to some of the elderly ones. One little known fact about the ushers is their hidden talent at babysitting! I remember a service when one particularly active toddler insisted on doing his rounds during the sermon and making himself known to various members of the congregation. The quick-witted usher came to the rescue and took the youngster by the hand on a walk around the church garden to expend the little one's surplus energy. As can be seen, an usher's life is not an uninteresting one. But the key issue here is: service, It's not just a matter of showing people to their seats. It is a very valid way of serving God, an expression of love. I know of several ushers who have told me that ushering provides them with the wonderful opportunity of mixing around with other people. One said: “Ushering gave me my first chance to get involved in the whirl of church life. As a result, it opened the way to a greater commitment as a Christian. It's also a great way of saying: 'I care!". • 1990s | 1992 Rev Chew Hock Hin

1992 Rev Chew Hock Hin How I Became A Christian Rev Chew Hock Hin The first pastor of Paya Lebar Methodist Church and the pioneer pastor of Pentecost and Geylang Methodist Churches. He wrote how his faith was tried by the people he loved. From a staunch Buddhist family I was brought up in a staunch Buddhist home. Our family goddess was Kwan Im, the Goddess of Mercy, to whom I was "dedicated" when I was a boy. We belonged to the Mahayana Buddhist sect which teaches the way of salvation through personal merits gathered by doing good deeds, by the number of prayers orally recited or by mechanical means and other ways. Soon I was entrusted with the daily family devotions which I carried out regularly and conscientiously. As regards good deeds, apart from giving alms to beggars, I used to ask my father to buy birds by the hundreds which I took to the temple to offer to the goddess and then liberate them in the compound of the temple. As regards the saying of prayers, I somehow liked this most of all, as I felt this to be the most effective way of gathering merits because it demanded effort. During school days, I was able to say a few hundreds of prayers, and on Saturdays and Sundays I was able to say more than a thousand prayers. Emptiness in my life My parents often praised me for my religious zeal and I felt flattered and happy. However, in spite of the temporary upliftment such praise brought to me, I felt an inward discontent which I could not explain. This went on for some time until one Sunday morning I felt an inward urge to go and find "Something" which could give this peace of heart but I had no idea where to find "IT". I was walking down Fort Canning Rise; I heard singing as I was approaching a building. Something within me said, "This is the place!" It was the Anglo-Chinese School Chapel, which was later demolished. Being a stranger to the place and as I was a student of Raffles Institution I dared not go in, in spite of the inner voice urging me to enter. After walking past the place three times, I gathered the little courage I had and timidly walked into the Chapel. After standing and singing a few more times, the boys and girls walked out. I thought it was the end of the meeting; however, I noticed that they did not walk out of the compound, but some turned to the right and some to the left. While I was wondering what to do next, I happened to recognise an acquaintance and stopped to ask him where the people were going. On being told that they were going to their various classes in the Sunday School, I asked him if I could be admitted. He kindly took me to his class and introduced me to his teacher. My first Sunday school class When the teacher asked if I had a Bible or a New Testament, I told him I did not know what they were. I was handed a copy of the New Testament, for which I paid 15 cents. The moment my hands held the New Testament, the Voice within me said, "This is IT!" I was so happy to have found the "Something"! With the New Testament in my hand and joy in my heart, I walked home as if walking on air! You may also like Share Testimony 1993 Church Building Project 2006 The Heart of a Shepherd 1990s First encounter with the Bible I went to my room and without a moment's delay began to read from this BOOK. I turned to the first book of the New Testament and began to read with great expectation. However, as I read the long list of Jewish names which I could hardly pronounce, repeating "So and so begat So-and-so," I was rather disappointed. Refusing to be discouraged, I read on and soon came to verse 18 which reads, "This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about." From then on it was interesting reading. When I read chapters 5,6 and 7, I was so gripped by the wonderful and powerful words of the Lord Jesus Christ that I was convinced those words were written specially for me. For the first time in my life I was made to see things I was hiding in my heart - selfishness, meanness, dishonesty, hatred, jealousy and impurity. I saw that the outward performance of my religion was a sham. It was done mainly for self-praise. I abhorred myself. What a big hypocrite I was! I was ashamed of myself. Recognising my true self While I was searching my heart, I felt an Invisible Presence as of love persuading me to confess and repent. I immediately knelt down and confessed all my sins -- all the evil deeds I had done, the evil words I had spoken and the evil thoughts I had entertained in my heart. I prayed for forgiveness and as I rose up, I felt and knew that my sins were forgiven and my heart was cleansed. I was so happy and my heart was flooded with "joy unspeakable and full of glory." (1 Pet 1:8) This was my first spiritual experience and it was all the working of the Holy Spirit! I became convinced that the BIBLE is THE WORD OF GOD, that my Saviour JESUS CHRIST is a LIVING PRESENCE, that all my sins had been forgiven and that I was a CHILD OF GOD! Leaving the "old world" I could not worship the goddess Kwan Im any more, nor could I say prayers to her because the Lord had taught me, "When ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathens do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking." (Matt 6:7) It was not an easy thing to decide but I prayed for guidance and courage to do what was right. In less than a week's time the whole household had already observed the change in my life. From the time the Lord came into my heart, fellowship with Him became natural and I also yearned for fellowship with Christians in the Sunday School and in the Church. When Sunday came I was so happy, and I would be in the Sunday School an hour before the Sunday School began. I loved to help the care-taker to open the door and windows and sweep the floor and arrange the hymnals. Oh the joy of being in the house of God! Take the easy way out? I attended not only the Sunday School but also the morning service. After the service I walked home with joy overflowing in my heart. One day, as I was approaching my house, I noticed my father was standing on the pavement waiting for me. Instantly a voice seemed to say to me, "Hock Hin, you had better tell your father that you have been to a friend's house." I knew that would be an easy way to escape punishment, but I also knew that would be a lie. I made up my mind to tell the truth and "to face the music." I prayed for courage and when I reached the house, my father immediately asked me where I had been. Without hesitation, I told him that I had been to Church. He was very angry, and warned me of the consequences if I would go to Church again. On the following Sunday, I was so happy to be in the house of God, and after the service walked home singing all the way. On approaching the house, I saw my father was again waiting for me with something in one hand. The same voice came to tempt me to tell the lie so as to escape punishment. Again I refused, but prayed for courage to face my father's wrath. As soon as I told my father that I had been to the Church, down came the cane. It was painful and I cried, but I did not try to run away; on the other hand I knelt before him and allowed him to cane me. I was never bitter against my father, but prayed that the day would come when he could understand and accept the Lord as his personal Saviour. The biggest hurdle This became my regular experience for several weeks, and on one Sunday as I stepped into the parlour of the house, I was surprised to see the whole family in the parlour. I was the second youngest of eight brothers and four sisters. My father faced me and said something to this effect, "Hock Hin, we have been discussing something about you. You have to decide what you want to do. If you want to stay with us, you will have to stop going to Church. If you insist on going to Church, you must leave the house and I will publicly disown you as my son." This was a terrible crisis in my life and I trembled with fear. In my heart I prayed for guidance. Immediately the Lord spoke to me, "Be of good cheer. I am with you. Be not afraid." I was greatly comforted by the presence of the Lord and His assurance. As I was about to reply to my father, I saw my mother's face in sad agony and I could not speak up. The Lord spoke during "the storm" Then the Lord reminded me, "He that loveth father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me." I knew I had to decide one way or the other, so I prayed for guidance. "Be not afraid. I am with you." On being thus assured I was given the courage to speak to my father. "Father, I love you, I love mother and love our home. I do not wish to go out of this house. However, I must be honest. I have decided to be a Christian." On hearing this, my Father handed me a bundle and pointed me to the door. They had already bundled my clothes in newspapers. How I wept as I took the bundle with my trembling hands and walked out not knowing where I was going, simply believing that the Lord was with me and would guide me. As I walked and wept, the presence of the Lord was my only consolation. For how long and how far I walked I did not know. Suddenly I heard footsteps behind me. Someone called me and said, "Good news for you, Hock Hin! Your parents have agreed that you can go to Church. Come back." I was so happy to hear this and cried, "Thank You, Lord Jesus!" • Mandarin Service | 2010 Living Stones 10th Anniversary

2010 Living Stones 10th Anniversary LOUD CHEERS! Echo Choo "Let us sing and dance as we rejoice and declare loudly that there is a God!” Amidst the sound of joyful singing, the Living Stones' 10th Anniversary Celebration Service on 19 September began. As a Chinese saying goes: "It takes a decade to grow a tree, and a century to nurture a man." Under God's leadership, the Living Stones Mandarin Service has, from a tender young seedling, grown in the Lord after going through years of joys and tears, into a tree whose roots are established in the promised land of Canaan. The Lord has shown again that His promises never come to nought! You may also like Share Testimony 2013 Living-stones Mid-autumn-festival Outreach 1989 5th Anniversary Mandarin Service Over 600 people attended the Celebration Service that day. Among them were more than 60 new visitors to PLMC. Church members and guests all experienced the presence of the Holy Spirit and were touched by the atmosphere of celebration and joy. Those who were interviewed expressed their thoughts of the anniversary service. Some were deeply moved by the worship, some were enlightened by the sermon, while others were impressed with how the dream of producing our own CD album materialised. Indeed, what started as a gentle prompting has now become a CD album of tunes that delight every listener. Yet again, it proves that regardless of how big a man's dream may be, God will always be greater than that, as there is nothing He cannot accomplish. Being PLMC's ministry to the Mandarin speaking congregation, Living Stones has arrived at its first milestone of a decade. But we recognise that its journey to bring the gospel to the Mandarin speaking population has only just begun. Though the road ahead is long, we firmly believe that God will continue to guide us with His mighty hand. In the decades that follow, He has already prepared countless miracles for His children. As long as we continue to live in His will and submit to His leading, we will be able to witness these miracles! “... so that people may see and know, may consider and understand, that the hand of the Lord has done this, that the Holy One of Israel has created it.” ~ Isaiah 41:20 You may also like Share Testimony 2013 Living-stones Mid-autumn-festival Outreach 1989 5th Anniversary Mandarin Service

  • The Heart of a Shepherd 2006

The Heart of a Shepherd 2006 Rev Peter Koh Acts 20:28 28 Look after yourselves and everyone the Holy Spirit has placed in your care. Be like shepherds to God's church. It is the flock that he bought with the blood of his own Son. With this verse, the Lord confirmed the calling He had placed in the heart of Rev Peter Koh, our new Pastor-in-charge, to enter the pastoral ministry and to take care of God's sheep, the body of Christ. From left: Rev Peter Koh, Jenny, Paul Enoch and Josephine The Call "I first felt the Lord calling me into full-time ministry in 1990, at a session by Dr Gary Gregor. When he shared from 1 John 3:2, the realization that I am now a child of God dawned on me. I sensed the Lord telling me that He was reviewing His plan for my life. I continued to search for a word from the Lord. Then, one day, Dr Joy Silvaratnam prophesied over me and through him, the Lord told me to “stop playing a cat and mouse game, and come and serve Me”. Another two years of questioning followed, as I pondered over God's call. My wife was then expecting our second child, and we wondered how we would manage if I entered the full-time ministry. But God is good, and He assured me in His Word in Exo 23:25 that He would supply all our needs. With that assurance, I entered Trinity Theological College in 1996.” Upon his graduation, Rev Koh was posted to Barker Road Methodist Church, where he served for five years, before the Lord called him to PLMC. A third generation Christian, Rev Koh has strong memories of being “marched” to Kampong Kapor Methodist Church every Sunday by his maternal grandfather when he was a young boy. In the late 70s, he went through a period of deep searching for the Lord. He felt that there was something missing from his spiritual life, as he would sing the words of worship songs, declaring “I love you”, yet did not “see” or “feel” God. Then, in the 1980s, he experienced the baptism and infilling of the Holy Spirit. It happened one night, after he had an angry confrontation with the Lord and fell asleep. The presence of the Lord filled the room, and he received the baptism of the Holy Spirit and the gift of tongues. Personal vision for PLMC "To see people move/minister in the resurrection power of the Lord”. Rev Koh shares that he feels 2006 is a year of deliverance, of people coming to the Lord, and breaking free from their bondages. It is a time for God's people to break out of their mindsets and encounter God. Going back to basics, Rev Koh will stress on the theme of “Starting with God” as his pulpit focus for the month of January 2006. In line with our theme of “strengthening the stakes”, he will focus on getting right with God as we begin a new year. Prayer Requests “Pray for the Lord's wisdom for me as I pastor PLMC, that I will be able to meet the needs of the people. Pray also for grace, and strength to meet the needs of the large "flock” at PLMC.” You may also like Share Testimony 2006 Pastor Barnabas Chong Numbering 78 Years 2000s

  • Mandarin Service | 2005 Celebrating “Living Stones” Mandarin Service's 5th Anniversary

2005 Celebrating “Living Stones” Mandarin Service's 5th Anniversary Coco Yin Our "Living Stones" Mandarin Service (MS) is now five years old! In these five years, the congregation has grown from a spiritual infant, drinking milk, to a sprightly youth filled with the Holy Spirit and actively involved in blessing our community, as well as missions work overseas. It was with great rejoicing that we celebrated our 5th anniversary on 18 September 2005. We began the celebration in worship, with our worship team singing a new song "Jesus! Jesus!" . As we worshipped, we sensed the magnificent presence of the Lord. As the worship ended, Rev Wee Boon Hup was invited to dedicate this occasion. He thanked God for everyone in the congregation, and briefly recalled the inception of “Living Stones" five years ago. He shared his aspirations for “Living Stones” to be the bridge: to bring the good news of salvation to the Chinese-speaking community in Singapore. He said that as the majority of the English speaking population have heard the gospel, the "torch" is now in the hands of the MS members to reach the Mandarin-speaking population. He concluded by encouraging "Living Stones” to love the Lord more deeply, ever learning to serve the Lord.
