As we celebrate our 90th Anniversary together, we hope to bring to you, a “Down Memory Lane” experience, to tell of His wonderous deeds through the years. As we look through the exhibits, the last verse of the Gospel of John came to mind: Jesus did many other things as well. If every one of them were written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written – John21:25 NIV. Similarly, Our Lord has done so much through our 90 years that the committee had only scratched the surface in finding articles that record what our Lord has done in and through PLMC. We sincerely apologise for missing out any of the ministries and events that are close to your hearts, not because they are not important but just that we did not have sufficient resources and time to find the records of them. It is our hope that as you ‘walk’ through this exhibition: 1. You will be reminded of your personal experiences of His power & love through these events in our church. 2. You will be reminded that our God is that same faithful, promise keeping God and we too, can see His wonders of the Biblical days displayed even in these recent 90 years. 3. That these memories unite us together in His love to continue to build the Church that He intends for us to be. You are encouraged to send in your personal testimonies and thanksgivings to add on to this exhibition; this is so that we can continue to spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together but encouraging one another and all the more as we see the Day approaching. Just click the “Praise The Lord” icon and it will lead you to a submission page. • 2010 - 2021 | 2020 Facing COVID-19

2020 Facing COVID-19 Goliath: A David's Perspective Vera Lim The respiratory illness, which started in China in late 2019 had spread to a number of countries across Asia and the world. On Sunday 9 February 2020, I strolled into Paya Lebar Methodist Church with my family. This was my first time back in church after the CNY break as we had been away in Indonesia to visit my in-laws. Given the number of cases in Singapore, it was reasonable to expect an atmosphere of fear and speculation of how potent the virus could be and how fast it would spread. Yet, as I entered the Sanctuary on that morning, the believers who were present did not seem too perturbed or concerned. My sense of calm dissipated into concern that very same evening as the Ministry of Health reported Case 41 as an elderly man who had “visited Paya Lebar Methodist Church prior to his hospital admission”. Immediately, questions raced through my mind and I wondered, "Why did this incident take place in this Sanctuary? Why did it happen?" As I prayed and I sought the Lord over the next few days, the Holy Spirit reminded me of the story of David and Goliath. In 1 Samuel 17:4 , we were told that a champion named Goliath came out of the Philistine camp. You may also like Share Testimony 1989 5th Anniversary 1916 History of PLMC 2010 - 2021 Goliath was not your average enemy; he was over nine feet tall and had a bronze helmet on his head and wore a coat of scale armour of bronze weighing more than 58 kilograms; he even had protections for his legs. He challenged the Israelites. He taunted them and asked for one of Saul’s men to come down and fight him. Upon hearing these challenges, Saul and all the Israelites “were dismayed and terrified” (1 Sam 17:11). The COVID-19 is, in many ways, similar to Goliath. COVID-19 is a corona-virus and it has a “crown” which allows it to attach to the host. It looks formidable, like Goliath, but the fatality has been relatively low (less than 2% worldwide). Yet, who can come against this Goliath? Who do we have in our camp? In the story of 1 Samuel 17, a little shepherd boy David assured King Saul, “let no one lose heart on account of this Philistine, your servant will go and fight him”. What did this shepherd boy bring to fight Goliath? Was it with the coat of armour and the bronze helmet that Saul gifted him? This shepherd boy went in the name of the Lord and in verse 45, he said to Goliath, “I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel”. Truly, our battle with this Goliath will be won, for this battle is the Lord’s. Be encouraged and know that as David the shepherd boy defeated Goliath, our God will save us. May we have the childlike faith of a shepherd boy in facing this Goliath. You may also like Share Testimony 1989 5th Anniversary 1916 History of PLMC 2010 - 2021

  • Cell Group | 2011 The Cost and Commitment of Community

2011 The Cost and Commitment of Community Angela and Jonathan Lim Boon Seng Our cell group began 5 years ago. We are five families with 12 young children every third Sunday of the month. ranging in age from 14 months to seven years. Our immediate challenges then were overwhelming. Jonathan and Angela Lim have three children, Josiah (7), Alicia (5) and Andrea (3). They love the sun, sand and sea at Sentosa! They also take great delight in feasting at their favourite food centre every Sunday before attending church. Jonathan has led different cell groups for the last 15 years, from all men’s group to a young adults group and now a young family group. Our Struggle As families with young children, many of us struggled with attending church services without distractions from babies and toddlers. The thought of attending cell group meetings was even more unthinkable. We had to adjust the daily routines of our children as well as to see to the logistics. Also it was not possible to pray without being interrupted. We could not concentrate during Bible Study. We were constantly looking out for our children. At that time, we dared not think of serving God in other ministries. You may also like Share Testimony 1989 Help Your Sunday School Family Life Ministry Cell Group Our Strategy for Community Living However, the desire to meet and encourage one another in our walk with our Lord kept us going. We decided to restructure our cell group meetings. After combined worship, fathers and mothers would take turns to study the Word of God and to have a longer prayer session. The other parent would remain with the children. The reverse would take place during the following cell meeting. This brought about a dramatic change to our cell meetings. It freed us to pray, listen and discuss the Word of God without any interruptions. We could have deeper sharing and a more intimate prayer time. We formed a stronger emotional bond over time and have become a vital spiritual support for one another. This strategy has created a wonderful opportunity for the fathers to bond with the children. Usually, when it is the fathers' turn to look after the children, we would take the children out for a short trip. We have visited farms and playgrounds, gone kite-flying in the park, etc. Although we have less time to complete a Bible study, we really appreciate the uninterrupted focus. More recently, we have started a couples-only meeting. As adults, we long for a more intimate time with our Lord. We also recognise the importance of having different insights and perspectives from spouses for a more balanced discussion. Hence, we took a leap of faith and trusted God for baby-sitters during our couples’ meeting every third Sunday of the month. In our cell group, everyone takes ownership. We take turn to lead worship, conduct Bible study, pray, provide snacks, share books and toys. We rotate our meeting place among our homes. Our Sacrifice As our cell meets thrice monthly, we have to be disciplined to keep our children free from Sunday enrichment classes. We want to inculcate in the children that cell life is part of family life. We openly remind one another to put cell meetings as priority and to trust God for our children's education. is so tempting to maximize every hour of the weekend for the children's enrichment programmes. Our cell group is also committed to attending church services regularly. This may not sound like a big deal to many. But for families with young children, attending worship service can be a challenge. The cell group has decided to be faithful regardless. Our Next Step of Faith The group now desires to be actively accountable for the spiritual health of each cell member. We plan to have a more structured programme for our children so that we can build in them God's Word during our cell meetings. We also intend to trust God for each of us to start serving God again in any church ministry (some of us have started. doing so at the beginning of the year). "We constantly look out for one another. Our præuer support is heartfelt and Peelings are freely shared. We keep one another in the loop for mutual accountability. We also live as a community with house or hospital visits, gatherings, etc. We have upheld, corrected, encouraged or rebuked Plin. 3:16) one another. This cell group has been a blessing to us." - Alex and Veronica “Sometimes, I feel that know more about what is going on in the lives of my cell members than my own siblings. I truly enjoy this cell. It has kept my family from moving to another church. The thought of leaving this cell is unbearable." - Patrick and Ailyn "Our cell group has become our regular reminder to walk in God's path. We have learned to reach out to our community of family, friends and colleagues outside our comfort zone." - Omar and Anna You may also like Share Testimony 1989 Help Your Sunday School Family Life Ministry Cell Group

  • 2002 Peranakan Christmas Celebration

2002 Peranakan Christmas Celebration Puji Tuhan! Praise the Lord! Jennifer Pei Being a Chinese who does not know anything about the Peranakan language, I found myself in a familiar yet strange situation at the Peranakan Christmas Celebration held on 14 Dec 2002. The place was familiar, so were the people. But the whole celebration was done in the Peranakan language, which is foreign to me. However, that did not stop some PL staff (who are also foreign to the language) and me from joining in the fun and blessing. Indeed, we were all there to celebrate the love of the Lord. The celebration kicked off with the screening of a Peranakan comedy show ‘Kalu Jodoh Tak Mana Lari' . Occasional bursts of laughter filled the Haven as the video was screened. Then Rev Wee said the opening prayer and Major Earl Robson led us into Praise and Worship. After a time of praising God, the mini Christmas concert began with a solo by Mdm Betty Thio, who sang the famous 'Begawan Solo' with Christian lyrics to the music accompaniment by Mr Eric Wee. Following this, the people were serenaded with more singing by the Peranakan Singers, a solo singing by Mr Jusuf Kam, and a duet by Ms Judith and Deborah, which brought the Christmas spirit to its climax. After all the singing and clapping, we settled down to listen to the word of God being delivered by Mrs Phebe Kodrat. The evening ended with a time of eating and fellowshipping, not forgetting the nice little Christmas gifts that each one received. It was indeed a pleasant evening spent with the Peranakan congregation that is very much a part of our culture and heritage. Puji Tuhan! All are welcome to join in the Peranakan Saturday Fellowship at 4.00 pm and the Sunday Worship Service at 7.30 am. Please contact the church for more information. • Family Life Ministry | 2018 Strengthening Our Marriage

2018 Strengthening Our Marriage Marriage Enrichment Weekend (June 2018) Tan Ee Hong Wow! Jordan Hall was wonderfully set-up for our couple date. The warm and romantic ambience put us into a relaxed and non-threatening mood. Excitedly, we started the day looking forward to a wonderful time that God had in store for each of the 17 couples. Bishop Emeritus Dr Wee started the morning by recollecting the marriage vows with us, “…to love and to cherish, till death do us part…” It is important to nourish our marriage with the right kind of food – LOVE. Discover your spouse’s love language and cherish each other. Another key ingredient is “to wash each other’s feet” as seen in our acts of submission, serving and forgiving each other. Pride would prevent us from resolving marital conflicts. You may also like Share Testimony 2018 Tea with Dad 2019 Marriage Mentoring Ministry Family Life Ministry Topics included Nourishing Our Marriage, The Pillars of Marriage, The Little Foxes, The Marriage Toolbox and The Marriage Covenant. Bishop Wee’s teaching was well-balanced with biblical views and practical tips, and targeted at areas that are critical to the health of one’s marriage. After each message by Bishop, we could engage in a couple heart-to-heart talk to affirm our strengths and surface weaknesses to work on. We were deeply ministered by the biblical truths regarding God’s design for marriage, the couple time to dialogue over these areas and the life sharing of two invited guest couples who had walked the talk. Praise God for the wonderful couple date that has definitely strengthened our marriage! Siow Aik and Lorinne shared on the initial years of marriage with its ups and downs, their personality differences and when their 3 children came into the scene, how they worked through it, thereby, strengthening the pillars in their marriage. Allen and Jenny shared on “the little foxes” that invaded their vineyard and how by not paying attention to ‘idols, neglect, sarcasm, uncalled remarks’ or other small issues, it has hurt their marriage. They shared how they worked to catch and eliminate the “foxes” before it became detrimental to the health of their marriage. Their honest and transparent sharing showed the realities of a marriage and gave us hope, especially to some who might feel overwhelmed by the struggles in their marriage. • Early Years | 1916 History of PLMC

1916 History of PLMC from 30th Anniversary Magazine The early history of many a Methodist Church in Malaya has been closely connected with that of a Methodist Day School, and so it was in the case of the Paya Lebar Methodist Church. In 1916, the Methodist Mission, through the District Superintendent, the Rev. J.S. Nagle purchased a piece of land just opposite the Paya Lebar Police Station. On this land stood the Oriental Hotel, which was used as a branch of the Anglo-Chinese School. The School began under the headmastership of Mr. R. Hanam, and was known then as the Methodist Preparatory English School. Two of the present church members, Miss Ruby Chua and Mr. Lee Teck Hock were amongst the first group of pupils. The Oriental Hotel building, where the school was housed, began to show signs of age and so the School was moved to a shophouse at 166-D, Upper Serangoon Road where it continued to function. The hotel building itself was demolished in 1930. At the 39th Annual Conference of the Methodist Church, held in Singapore between 9th and 15th January, 1931 under the chairmanship of Bishop Edwin F. Lee, the Finance Committee of the Methodist Church decided to put this property up for sale. A notice to this effect was put up, and it would seem that the Mission work was a failure if the entire property had been sold. Fortunately, only a small section (the site of the present ESSO Service Station) had been sold. The rest was saved by the timely action of the then District Superintendent, the Rev. W.S. Horley, on the advice of Mr. Daniel E. Sundram. You may also like Share Testimony 1932 Early Years 1999 67th Anniversary Dedication Early Years At the request of the Norris sisters of 729, Paya Lebar Road and Mr. and Mrs. Goh Cheng Lim, the Rev. Horley called on Mr. Sundram to discuss with him this latest development. On the advice of Mr. Daniel E. Sundram, his mother and brothers, the Mission Treasurer decided not to negotiate any sale until further notice—with the exception of the corner, as had been mentioned earlier. The new private school at 166-D, Upper Serangoon Road, at this time, had about two dozen children and was under the charge of Mrs. The Phik Ho. At another meeting in the Norris home on Friday, 27th March, 1931, with the Rev. W.S. Horley in the Chair, it was announced that Mr. Daniel E. Sundram was to be honorarily in charge of the Mission work at Paya Lebar, and that he was to be assisted by a representative Committee pro-tem consisting of the District Superintendent, the Rev. W.S. Horley as Chairman, Mr. H. E. Bunn as Treasurer, Mr. Philip Khoo as Sunday School Superintendent and Mr. Khoo Chiang Bee, Mr. Peh Wah Kok, Mr. Lee Teck Hock, Rey. P.B. Means, Rev. Goh Hood Keng Mrs. The Phik Ho, and Misses E. Norris, G. David and Khoo Cheng Ee (now Mrs. Lee Teck Hock). During the earlier period there was no organised church. There was a Sunday School of about ten. Friends then began to take an increasing interest in the work of the church, and at the end of the year, on Christmas Day, the first five young men were baptised and received into the church membership by the Rev. Abel Eklund. Sunday, 10th July, 1932 saw the inauguration of the Paya Lebar Methodist Church at 166-D, Upper Serangoon Road. The Service was conducted by the Rev. Abel Eklund. At this service the first Official Board was named. It consisted of Messrs. H. E. Bunn, Philip Khoo, Daniel E. Sundram, Phua Swee Kim, Lim Hee Yang, Loh Boon Chwee, Miss Khoo Cheng Ee (now Mrs. Lee Teck Hock) and Mrs. K. Chiang. At a request from Mr. Daniel E. Sundram to Bishop Edwin F. Lee, Mr. Chew Hock Hin was in 1934 made minister in charge of the Paya Lebar Methodist Church. His appointment was read at the Annual Conference of the Methodist Church held in January, 1934. After the Conference Mr. Chew Hock Hin, with Mr. and Mrs. Peh Wah Kok, visited Mr. Daniel E. Sundram at 15, Boundary Road and asked him to continue as Principal and teacher of the School. This Mr. Sundram did until 1935, after which Mrs. Chew Hock Hin took over. When he became minister of Paya Lebar Methodist Church, Rev. Chew Hock Hin began visiting homes of peoples living in the district. Soon, under his evangelistic fervour, the membership of the church grew, until the four-classroom building in use then was found to be inadequate. A building fund for a proper church began. Concerts and bazaars were organised to raise funds. Within 2 years the foundation stone of the new Church building was laid. The Church was completed a few months later and dedicated on the 1st Sunday of May, 1938. In 1942 the 2nd World War broke out, and the church received its share of shelling from the Japanese. However, the damages were repaired and the authorities allowed the Church to hold services as usual. It was during this period that the Social Service was started to give relief to needy Church members. After the war, the Church was quickly re-habilitated with financial aid from the American Crusade Funds. All the various activities of the church were resumed and the church started evangelistic work at Pulau Samboe. This work was later stopped by the authorities. In 1947, Rev. and Mrs. Chew Hock Hin were awarded Crusade scholarships to the U.S. On their return Rev. Chew was placed in charge of both Paya Lebar and Geylang Straits Chinese Methodist Churches. To assist him in his heavy work, Mr. Wee Chin Kam was appointed the first paid assistant pastor in 1954. In December, 1957, the Church requested the Annual Conference for the appointment of a full-time minister. Thus the Rev. Edwin Khoo became the first full-time pastor of Paya Lebar Methodist Church. Rev. Khoo served only for a year. During his short tenure of office, two young people's organisations were born - "Make Youth Find" and "Crusaders for Christ.” The former has since become a Singapore District Methodist Youth Fellowship affair, and the latter, whose membership consisted strictly of pupils from the Paya Lebar Methodist Girls' School, is now defunct. The year 1959 saw the Rev. Wong Hoon Hee's ministry at Paya Lebar Methodist Church. As in the case of Rev. Khoo, the Rev. Wong served for only a year also, after which he was transferred to Malacca. In 1960, the Rev. Kenneth J. Chellappah, took over the ministry of the Church. Under his inspired guidance, the struggling Methodist Youth Fellowship found its footing once again and began to grow in stature. Today it is a steady organisation. Leading the Malay-speaking congregation is Mr. Raymond Phoa who is at present doing his housemanship at the Trinity Theological College. Apart from his Malay work, Mr. Phoa also assists the Rev. Chellappah in the English language services and the general ministry of the Church. Under the leadership of the Rev. Chellappah and Mr. Raymond Phoa, Paya Lebar Methodist Church now holds three services every Sunday-two in English, at 8 a.m. and 10 a.m., and one in Malay at 9 a.m. A notable feature in the church's history is the dedication of a new chancel and altar. This took place this year on Sunday, 8th April 1962, and the service of dedication was conducted by the District Superintendent, the Rev. J.V. Ayaduray. The idea of this new chancel and altar, striking in their simplicity, came from the Rev. Chellappah. The funds towards their construction and installation came from the coffers of some of the Church's organisations and from the pockets of individual members and wellwishers. This year, Paya Lebar Methodist Church is 30 years old and is still serving the community in Paya Lebar. We sincerely hope and pray that the Church will go on from strength to strength and be as "a shining beacon set upon an hill," doing good in the name of Christ. • Outreach | 2008 An Introduction to International Student Fellowship

2008 An Introduction to International Student Fellowship Eugene Kwek, Outreach Committee On 7 November 2008, a new outreach initiative to reach out to foreign students in Singapore, led by our Outreach Department, held a briefing for PLMC worshippers who have a heart for this area of ministry. We praise and thank God for the 17 worshippers who signed up to serve in this ministry that evening. In the last year or so, God has placed a burden in the hearts of PLMC pastors and leaders to reach out to foreigners in Singapore. As we sought the Lord for His will in this area of outreach, it became clearer that He was leading us to connect with international students studying in Singapore. We began to notice the international students who had begun coming to our church. We also realised that there are several international and commercial schools and hostels for foreign students in our neighbourhood. The newly formed International Student's Ministry, made up of a committee of members from The Next Generation (youth ministry), English and Mandarin cell groups, hopes to befriend foreign students and share the Gospel with them, so that when they return to their home countries, they will bring the gospel back with them. The foreign students that they will focus on reaching out to are those from China, Indonesia and Thailand. Most of the committee members have been on our missions trips and have a passion for the people in our missions-focussed areas. You may also like Share Testimony 2009 Sonshine Kids Children's Ministry Outreach At the briefing session on 7 November, Steven Ng, Ng Vern Shion and Eugene Kwek, Outreach Executive, shared on the directions, needs and activities of this new outreach ministry. As PLMC begins to reach out to the foreign students studying and living near our church, we would like to invite all PLMC worshippers who feel that God is leading them to consider serving in this new outreach ministry to join the International Student's Ministry team. If you would like to know more about this ministry, contact Eugene Kwek at 6285-1234 ext 156 or email: eugene@plmc.org . What is ISM? The new International Student's Ministry seeks to reach out and befriend international students, as well as provide a social network where we can share the love of Christ and the Gospel with them through social and community activities. The International Students' Ministry (ISM) was officially launched on Saturday, 17 January 2009. 10 international students joined the inaugural ISM Gathering, which had a Chinese New Year theme, where they enjoyed themselves in a lantern-making activity and tasting Chinese New Year snacks. The event was a good opportunity for our PLMC befrienders, who had signed up to serve in this outreach ministry to international students, to foster friendships and build relationships with the guests. Some of the international students were from the nearby Parry Hall, a hostel for international students, where the ISM committee members had gone to distribute publicity flyers on our ISM activities. Others were guests invited by members from our TNG (Youth Ministry) and Mandarin Service. From this first event, the number of international students who attended the second ISM Gathering on 31 January 2009 grew to 15 guests. We praise God that some of the students from Parry Hall who attended the first event invited more of their friends to the second event. The guests were introduced to different cultures in Singapore through the different cuisines such as Malay and Peranakan food. They were also given different types of food and materials to decorate tables as stalls to “sell” their products. Another interesting activity involved the guests making a rainbow out of coloured paper over Noah's ark and the opportunity for us to share the significance of the rainbow and God's promise to mankind. We also praise the Lord that one of the students from Parry Hall, who had received a publicity flyer about our ISM activities, came to our church on Sunday, 1 February 2009, and gave his life to Jesus. All glory to God! You may also like Share Testimony 2009 Sonshine Kids Children's Ministry Outreach

  • Family Life Ministry | 2019 Marriage Preparation Course

2019 Marriage Preparation Course Testimonies by facilitators & participants Ronnie and Leah Tay - Facilitators Some months ago, the Family Life Ministry asked us to prayerfully consider being group facilitators for Marriage Preparation Course 2019. We accepted the invitation, as we felt it a privilege to be part of this important endeavour to help couples learn what God's will is in the covenant of marriage, so that they can not only begin their marriage right, but also prepare well for marriage during their courtship. There were 17 couples who registered for this course. For small group discussions, each group had about 4-5 couples with a pair of married facilitators. We met over 7 sessions in April and May. Some already had their wedding date fixed, while others had not decided on marriage yet but were keen to grow further in their relationship through this course. They were all very committed, faithfully coming each Wednesday evening after a whole day at work, to listen to a speaker or watch a video, share with each other during 'couple time', as well discuss the week's topic as a group. The group discussions were good opportunities for us to share with them issues that they may not have thought about during their courtship, but which could strain their marriage. It was most encouraging for us to see these young couples being so open to God's teaching and earnestly preparing themselves for marriage. Though we have been married for 25 years, we benefitted very much ourselves through the teaching on the various topics of this course, such as the biblical view of marriage, responsibilities as husband and wife, values in healthy relationships, intimacy, communication and conflict management and even money matters. We learnt much, too, from the participants' sincere questions and open sharing, and appreciated hearing the different perspectives of these millennials, who were not much older than our two young adult sons! It was also a joy to work closely with the MPC2019 team as well as our fellow group facilitators, in praying for the couples and preparing for each session. We are most blessed to have been a part of this ministry, journeying with the young couples over this short period of time, out of gratitude for the work God has done in our own marriage. Indeed, we are reminded to keep working at it, with His help! You may also like Share Testimony 2001 GYM Beginning 2015 The Marriage Course Family Life Ministry Allen & Jenny Cheng - Facilitators Our experience volunteering as Marriage Preparation Course facilitators over 7 weeks was fruitful and fulfilling. It was wonderful to learn alongside the participants. Going through the weekly sessions and homework really helped us to refresh our own memories and lessons learnt in our 28 years of marriage. Such memories also resulted in thanksgiving to God who has been our source of love, strength, and unfailing hope in times of trial. The Lord has redeemed us from our past mistakes and blessed us so much even through difficult times that we feel the need to be His channel of blessing to others. Serving and volunteering in the Marriage Preparation Course is one of the ways that helps keep our marriage fresh and flourishing, as we seek to encourage these young couples. Life after marriage with the arrival of young kids tends to pose a great challenge for married couples to get away by themselves to spend meaningful time together, romancing each other and keeping their love life constantly alive. We believe that this was a great opportunity for the participants to learn biblical truths together concerning what marriage is about and how they can establish weekly date nights where both partners can connect, communicate, and re-establish whatever might have been lost in the hassles of their busy lives. In our last session, we had the privilege to individually pray for each couple in our group. To be able to pray for them, bless them and have some personal time encouraging them felt like such a wonderful way to close the 7-week course. "We pray for you, young people, wishing you God's best as you embark on this journey together. We are confident that you will not stop learning and blessing your own marriage so that you can become living testimonies for many more younger couples in time to come. May your pillars of marriage and family life be strengthened. May your strong and loving marriages be the building blocks of our church and society, reflecting the oneness of our triune God and giving glory to Him. Amen. Caleb & Lianne - Participants Growing up in a Christian family and being in church has made me aware of how God views marriage, and how spouses should interact and love each other. However, we know that no relationship is ever without its problems, and that includes ours. My fiancé, Caleb, and I signed up for the Marriage Preparation Course ahead of our wedding in January 2019, in the hope of learning more about each other, and building a good foundation for our marriage. And indeed, the course did not disappoint. Held over a span of two months in April and May, the course comprised weekly sessions where we learnt more about the Biblical basis of marriage, leaving and cleaving, how to communicate and manage conflicts, as well as practical topics like handling our finances after marriage. We appreciated the weekly group sharing sessions, where all the couples were split up into groups led by an older couple in the church. Our facilitators, Wai Choong and Le Peng, answered our questions frankly and honestly, and gave us practical advice on how to handle difficult situations such as our relationships with our in-laws. We also went through an assessment with a trained counsellor after each of us had filled out a detailed questionnaire. To us, that was the most interesting and beneficial part of the course – we learnt so much about our strengths and weaknesses as a couple, and how we can work through our weaknesses to grow stronger as a couple. Ultimately, as Caleb and I went through the course, we found ourselves growing closer to each other and understanding each other more as we discussed the course materials in our free time and learnt more about how each of us loves and wants to be loved in return. And as we came to understand more clearly the role God has ordained for each of us in our relationship, we found ourselves seeking God more and drawing closer to Him, to understand His will for us in our marriage. • 1987 Personal Testimony

1987 Personal Testimony Ng Choon Hwee Choon Hwee is our Director of the Ministry to the Visually Impaired (MVI). If you wish to find out more about the Ministry to the Visually Impaired and how you can serve there, please drop Choon Hwee an email at mvi@plmc.org . I came from a non-Christian family and my first contact with Christians was through the Sunday School at the School for the Blind. Being from a non-Christian family background I soon began to dislike Christianity and this continued until my secondary school days when I began to have the attitude that as long as one did what was right and good, it did not really matter what religion one believed in. So I would sometimes support my Christian friends while at other times I would go against them. I became a Christian through the witness of Charles Quah, a member of our church, when I was in Pre-University one. For a while I was very active, participating in Sunday School, camps and bath Christian meetings for the blind. But then I began to question my faith and for about two years I struggled with questions about God's existence and His goodness. Thanks be to God for seeing me through this period of searching and thanks to my friends for supporting me with their prayers and encouragement. Then in 1984 I began to seek God's guidance about studying at the Singapore Bible College. I wanted to know more about God and have a closer walk with Him and to serve Him full-time if it was His will. My prayer then was that God would keep the door open if He wanted me to pursue a full time Bible course. The door was kept open and I enrolled at the Singapore Bible College in 1985. I have now been studying for one and a half years and God has been gracious in providing for my needs: To name one, He has provided volunteers to read to me. As a blind person, I am not able to read books in print and so have to depend on volunteers to read to me. Volunteers come and go but God has always ensured that I have enough readers. Besides, an overhead bridge was recently built outside the college making it possible for me to cross the road on my own. Without it, I would be stranded if no one is around. Furthermore; the Lord has also provided for me financially. Finally, with regards to my future ministry, I still do not know where I will serve. I believe God has a plan for me and I am waiting for the unveiling of that plan. In the meantime do remember my wife and me in prayer. Pray that Jesus will always be Lord of our lives. 2009 Sonshine Kids Celebrated 5th Anniversary on 27 June 2009 Carolyn Lee Sonshine Kids is 5 years old. God has been faithful, is faithful and will continue to be faithful to His children. We began in 2004, with a small group of volunteers who believed that the Lord is reaching out to the community's children. From humble beginnings, the weeks turned to years, of sowing and reaping the fruits of changed lives, for Jesus Christ, the Son of God. 27 June 2009 was a day filled with thanksgiving to the Lord. After weeks of preparation and planning, flyer distribution, assignment of duties and getting help from cell members, we were finally ready to reap the harvest that is ripe for harvesting. Everyone gave of his or her best to the Lord, with the talents that God has given each of them. It was a day of the Lord, as we see the workings of 1 Corinthians 12:4-6 being worked out to the glory of our Lord. But nothing could disturb the fun and learning that the children were going to have. The children from Covenant FSC, HOPE SCC, the Hougang community and the Sonshine Kids mingled together. We thank God for our leaders who put together a photo and video montage, after interviewing the children and compiling the photos taken over the years. We also thank God for Pastor Peter who gave a word of encouragement to the children and the leaders, followed by a song presentation by the Sonshine Kids with our very own Sonshine Kids Theme Song, composed by Jimmy, and a time of fun and laughter with the message of God's love, from Daughlas. Then the children went to various stations to play with the games that ranged from shooting games, golf, soccer, "string the wire” games, computer cooking games, sand art, tattoo painting and balloon sculpturing. We thank God for the many helpers who came to offer their help through their talents and gifts that made this 5th Anniversary celebrations so successful. It was a day of remembrance of God's faithfulness and love. We praise God for each and every of the coaches, teachers, helpers and friends who touched each child's life in his own special and unique way. May we continue to shine as we let the little children respond to the Lord as the Lord beckons... "Come unto Me”. To God be the glory. • 2010 - 2021 | 2016 The Safe Place

2016 The Safe Place In My Recovering Journey Andy Toh I was diagnosed with late-stage liver failure in Oct 2013 and was told that I would not survive without a transplant within the next few months. I am so thankful for the unselfish and demonstrative act of love from my colleague, Ralph, his wife Daphne and their family. Ralph is certainly an example of the Lord Jesus, who laid down His life for His friends. Ralph "laid down" 65% his liver for me on 15 May 2014. I will not take this gift of life for granted. God didn't let me walk alone in the hospital, as well. His grace was continually present through the care, love and concern that the medical staff of the National University Hospital showered upon me. The staff's warm and friendly greetings and gestures of love have made me feel that I am important and make me look forward to each follow up. I am also grateful for the working environment around me. The pastors, leaders and staff have been very understanding, giving me the space and the ministry work which I can handle. I praise God for that. It gave me time to settle back in and I got to spend more intentional time to reflect upon His Word and hear what He is directing me to do for the kingdom of God in the church and beyond as I seek to impart truth and impact lives for His glory. The people around me in church may not have realised that some of their spoken and unspoken words have uplifted me, as well. She has helped me to be slightly more disciplined. I praise and thank God for the P23CG too. Their combined faith and friendship has enabled me to recover inwardly and I often find encouragement in the Whatsapp chats, their sharing and their own growth. I am also thankful for the combined faith of those in the Worship Ministry as well as my friends from other ministries, I thank God for the many persons who constantly lift me up me in support and prayer. It is Christ in me, the hope of glory, that enabled me to go through the dark days of liver failure. It is His hope that gives me peace, help and purpose during my hospital experience and even now. It is certainly His Spirit that strengthens me when many times I felt so weak and wanted to give up. He heard my cries in the night when I poured out my soul to Him and assured me of His presence. He is surely my refuge and portion! I have truly found a safe space in the community of faith as well as in God's presence. I did not have to pretend to be strong and alright. Before my community, I did not have to brush aside my fears and hold back my tears. Their listening hearts, in addition to their patient love and silent care is enough to make them feel accepted and encouraged. I hope you can find that safe space in this community of believers as well as in the presence of God because that has allowed me to taste wholeness and healing, slowly but surely.
