How Ministry to Visually Impaired Started PLMC has been proclaiming the good news to the visually impaired in our community through a ministry started in 1988 by member Ng Choon Hwee. The ministry was suggested by Rev Dr Kang Ho Soon. Choon Hwee, who has been attending PLMC since 1973 and himself visually impaired, recalled: “Around 1985, I felt called to go into full-time ministry and went to Singapore Bible College to study for a Diploma in Theology. The number of visually impaired people coming to worship in PLMC was also increasing. Rev Kang felt that there should be someone to look after the needs and interests of the visually impaired. Hence the Ministry to the Visually Impaired was started in 1988 after my graduation." The Ministry to the Visually Impaired, aims to share the Gospel with those who are not sighted, make available Christian literature and tools to aid them in their spiritual growth and participate in the life of the church, and provide practical help. Ministry to the Visually Impaired In planning and organising outreach activities for the visually impaired, PLMC works closely with the Gospel Mission To The Blind, an interdenominational organisation. Choon Hwee said: “Each year we reach out to more than 40 visually impaired persons, of which about 15 are members of PLMC.” The ministry also transcribes Christian books into Braille and circulates them among the members. Members and friends can help transcribe Christian materials, such as Bible study notes, hymns and devotional materials into Braille. The ministry also extends a hand to those who need to use computers for their employment and studies. Without their sense of sight, the visually impaired do face obstacles in their lives. Choon Hwee shared that in the secular world, the visually impaired are often the last to be employed and the first to be retrenched. "Many employers are still fearful and hesitant to employ the visually impaired. Christians should set the example, give them the chance to prove themselves and help them fulfil their dreams." Very often too, while the visually impaired do try to be independent, there are times when they need help to get certain things done. Here is where members who are sighted can chip in. “Lend us your eyes! Feel free to come forward and volunteer your services if you see a visually impaired person in need. Most of us appreciate that,” says Choon Hwee. But don't be surprised or offended if sometimes, your offer for help is rejected. After all, they do try to lead as independent a life as possible. Many of us take our sense of sight for granted, and forget the needs of the visually impaired. Their appeal is to spare them a thought when planning and organising programmes, giving information, and to help ensure that buildings and public places are as accessible as possible and barrier free. After 11 years in the ministry, Choon Hwee's vision is: “For members to feel comfortable in PLMC and eventually become members of a normal cell group.” We look forward to more sighted members coming to fellowship with us. Learn from our Lord Jesus who lived, ate, walked and fellowshipped with everyone, regardless of their abilities and backgrounds, and showed what true brotherly love is all about. The invitation from the visually impaired ministry is clear: “Come and be our friends and get to know us. Only then will we know how to minister to one another. We love to fellowship with you but we can't see you and don't know where you are. So make the first move and we will reciprocate,” says Choon Hwee. - 2016 Peranakan Christmas Celebration
2016 Peranakan Christmas Celebration Jeanette Pang The members of the Peranakan Congregation put up a musical at their annual Party. It was held on 10 December 2016 at The Haven. The event brought together about 150 Christians from various churches, their guests, many of whom were decked out in snazzy Peranakan attire. "Through this event, we want to explore the true meaning of Christmas and at the same time promote the rich Peranakan culture," said Eric Wee, the musical's director. The musical told the story of three ladies - Soo Neo, Pong Neo and Ban Neo - who were walking along Orchard Road. Soo Neo did not understand how Christmas came about and her friends recounted to her the birth of the Lord Jesus. Soo Neo then pondered on the gift she could offer to Jesus for the sacrifice He had made. The cast was supported by a 12-member choir who sang a medley of Christmas songs at intervals during the musical. This was followed by a message delivered by Mrs Raymond Seet. The thrust of her Christmas message was on the best gifts which would find favour with Jesus. For Christians, these would be the devoting of our lives and Peranakan, and our hearts to glorify the name of Jesus. "I am glad our hard work paid off. All of us put in many hours of rehearsals for this event," said Ms Amy Lee, one of the lead actresses. The party ended with refreshments at the Fellowship hall where guests enjoyed a variety of Peranakan delicacies. "This is a really good event that opens up to the community. We are truly blessed with the warm hospitality and generosity," said an attendee, Eric Yeo from All Saints Presbyterian Church. Led by "Major" Grace See, our children Ministry director, the children at our Church School junior Department (7 to l 2 years) attended a "training" session on the importance of putting on the full armour of God to stand against the lies and deception of the evil one. Praise God that 80 children from both the 9.00 am and I l. I 5 am church school stood up when challenged to make a difference. They also came forward to be prayed for at the end of the session. And what's more, we welcomed four new children into God's family when they accepted Jesus as their Lord and Saviour! Church School Open Sunday is held once a month, with a special emphasis and theme. - 2017 Holy Communion to Homebound Members
2017 Holy Communion to Homebound Members Sylvia Heng & Alice Yeo Every first Thursday of the month, a group of about 60 members visit the residences of our homebound members to administer Holy Communion, and spend some time in worshipping the Lord together and in bringing cheer to them. We were very much surprised to see Mrs. Alice Lim waiting for us at the car porch, as though she was waiting for the visitation of the Heavenly Father. The moment she saw my car parked at the gate she walked slowly with her maid tagging behind to welcome us into her house with open arms despite her weak health. In our conversation, she shared that she misses the Sunday Church Services and thanked us for bringing the Church to her home and added she felt the presence of God in her. Last year, Mrs. Teo Han Cheow complained she had bad dreams and hallucinations nightly and was unable to sleep well. We prayed for her on each visit and finally there was a breakthrough and she thanked God she was set free. We taught her how to meditate on the Word of God and speak God's promises over herself every night before she goes to bed. On every visit, she testified that the power of God's Word healed her physically and emotionally. Bringing Holy Communion to the Homebound is a most rewarding experience for us to provide the spiritual, physical and emotional care they desire and need. We are there to give them the assurance that they are not forgotten and always part of the Body of Christ at PLMC. The smiles and hugs of these homebound members whom we visit make our time and effort worth it. If you have the heart for the homebound and would like to bring cheer to them, please contact the Church Office. You may also like Share Testimony 2017 Encounter God Night WSCS 2010 - 2021
- Filipino Service | 2019 Thinking About His Love
2019 Thinking About His Love Raquel Cardano For many of our sisters in the Filipino Service, Mother's Day is a painful reminder of their physical absence from their family especially their growing children. Many of them have come to work here in Singapore to provide a better life for their families through financial provision, leaving their loved ones back home. But this year's Mothers' Day was made special for them by our Mandarin Service (MS) brothers and sisters. A special lunch buffet was sponsored by MS for the Filipino Service (FS) worshippers before the worship service that Sunday. They also joined the early part of the service to worship the Lord, singing a Tagalog praise song. Although they could not sing a single Tagalog word, we could see them dancing and expressing their "Halal" (Hebrew for "praise") towards the God of the nations. Indeed, worship and music unite the hearts of people from every tribe and tongue. You may also like Share Testimony 1985 Floral Ministry 2004 Love is Filipino Service After that part of the worship, the MS brothers and sisters lined up in front to pray for each one of us from the Filipino Service, while blessing each with lovely door gifts. It was such a heart-warming portrait of the Body of Christ praying and caring for each other, being one - just what Jesus prayed to God the Father for in John 17. We sang a few more worship songs, which included the song "Think About His Love" by Don Moen. The words went, "Think about His love, think about His goodness Think about His grace that's brought us through For as high as the heavens above So great is the measure of our Father's love Great is the measure of our Father's love So great is the measure of our Father's love..." Tearing uncontrollably, I was singing the song and in my mind, God's love was demonstrated right before my eyes. It was so real, so tangible, and so true. Perhaps, for the Mandarin Service, they wanted to obey God, when they were prompted by the Spirit to bless the Filipino Service. But for the Filipino Service, it brought inexpressible joy, feeling the touch of God's hands through their generosity, care and prayer. - 1962 30th Anniversary
1962 30th Anniversary The Ministers' Message Kenneth J. Chellappah & Raymond Phoa We count it a special privilege and honour to be serving this Church this year when we are celebrating our Thirtieth Anniversary. Times such as these are times of recollection and thanksgiving. We remember with gratitude those who have gone before, the Ministers and faithful lay folk who laid the foundations and those who built thereon. To them we owe a debt that only faithful service and love can repay. Church Life 1962 Above all we must thank God our Father for His guidance and concern over these past years as our Church has grown from strength to strength. It is His work, therefore let us give Him the glory. “Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labour in vain.” What must make us more humble is the fact that man is often unfaithful to his God. Yet God uses him, so that His purposes may be fulfilled. “Thou canst use our weakness, to magnify Thy power.” We must also add a word of appreciation for the good work done by Mr. Yap Chip Guan and his team of faithful workers who have handled all the arrangements for this week. Young and old have worked faithfully and enthusiastically for several months. The organizations — the Choir, the W.S.C.S., the MYF and the BB,—have all done their share. A big "Thank you” to all from your ministers. Above all, “To God be the glory, great things He hath done”. - 2015 A Note From Pastor Gladwin Lee
2015 A Note From Pastor Gladwin Lee Dear brothers and sisters of PLMC, I may not have grown up in PLMC as a child, but I have been blessed to call you my family. Two and a half years ago, I was posted to serve here in PLMC. Out of obedience, my family came with me hoping to find our place in PLMC. But I never expected that PLMC would make its home in a special place of my heart, in such a short period of time. My dear PLMC youths: Your tenacity and passion for God constantly stirs me to love God radically and pursue his purposes passionately. Pursue your dreams, no matter how grandiose they are. Y ou don't need a big GOD for small dreams - so dare to dream! Like the words in the song ‘Hosanna’, the world awaits to see you rise up to take your place with selfless faith, as you seek God Himself! I am excited to see what will happen when all of you open your arms wide to let God stretch you to be transformed from God’s little streams into His River of Life! My dear fellow pastors: Thank you for watching out for this little brother of yours. I will miss our camaraderie and exploits-silly and divine. I will miss dancing and soaking in God’s presence with you. I pray that you will continue to lead PLMC to host God's presence where incense is lifted day and night! Our leaders in the LCEC, PPRSC, cluster leaders and cell leaders: Thank you for honoring me as your pastor, despite my youthful looks! Thank you for your generosity and trust in me, your constant support, and your prayers. I have seen possibilities become realities when we move in power and love. May you continue to bear God's mantle of loving others into intimacy with God! To everyone else in PLMC: Thank you for making my family and I a part of your family and I a part of your family. This PLMC family is precious in my heart and I only wish our time together could be longer. I love our kampong-ness, where everyone is family. Through you, I have received a greater revelation of the Heart of our God. Even though my journey in PLMC has ended for this season, my journey of knowing God as my father has just begun. It has been a privilege to be your pastor. Thank you for being the family I so loved and will miss. 2014 Evangelistic Christmas Arise, Shine! Christmas 2014 was different from years past. The W&M Ministry put together an evangelistic musical entitled "Arise, Shine!" Three shows were staged, all of which saw our Sanctuary filled. Leading up to Christmas, members were strongly encouraged to invite their pre-believing friends as the focus of this musical was to reach out to them. We thank God for the 13 salvations and three re-dedications over the course of the two days. You may also like Share Testimony 2015 Unsung Heroes 1984 Musical 2010 - 2021
