  • Family Life Ministry | 2019 Marriage Preparation Course

2019 Marriage Preparation Course Testimonies by facilitators & participants Ronnie and Leah Tay - Facilitators Some months ago, the Family Life Ministry asked us to prayerfully consider being group facilitators for Marriage Preparation Course 2019. We accepted the invitation, as we felt it a privilege to be part of this important endeavour to help couples learn what God's will is in the covenant of marriage, so that they can not only begin their marriage right, but also prepare well for marriage during their courtship. There were 17 couples who registered for this course. For small group discussions, each group had about 4-5 couples with a pair of married facilitators. We met over 7 sessions in April and May. Some already had their wedding date fixed, while others had not decided on marriage yet but were keen to grow further in their relationship through this course. They were all very committed, faithfully coming each Wednesday evening after a whole day at work, to listen to a speaker or watch a video, share with each other during 'couple time', as well discuss the week's topic as a group. The group discussions were good opportunities for us to share with them issues that they may not have thought about during their courtship, but which could strain their marriage. It was most encouraging for us to see these young couples being so open to God's teaching and earnestly preparing themselves for marriage. Though we have been married for 25 years, we benefitted very much ourselves through the teaching on the various topics of this course, such as the biblical view of marriage, responsibilities as husband and wife, values in healthy relationships, intimacy, communication and conflict management and even money matters. We learnt much, too, from the participants' sincere questions and open sharing, and appreciated hearing the different perspectives of these millennials, who were not much older than our two young adult sons! It was also a joy to work closely with the MPC2019 team as well as our fellow group facilitators, in praying for the couples and preparing for each session. We are most blessed to have been a part of this ministry, journeying with the young couples over this short period of time, out of gratitude for the work God has done in our own marriage. Indeed, we are reminded to keep working at it, with His help! It was wonderful to learn alongside the participants. Going through the weekly sessions and homework really helped us to refresh our own memories and lessons learnt in our 28 years of marriage. Such memories also resulted in thanksgiving to God who has been our source of love, strength, and unfailing hope in times of trial. The Lord has redeemed us from our past mistakes and blessed us so much even through difficult times that we feel the need to be His channel of blessing to others. Serving and volunteering in the Marriage Preparation Course is one of the ways that helps keep our marriage fresh and flourishing, as we seek to encourage these young couples. Life after marriage with the arrival of young kids tends to pose a great challenge for married couples to get away by themselves to spend meaningful time together, romancing each other and keeping their love life constantly alive. We believe that this was a great opportunity for the participants to learn biblical truths together concerning what marriage is about and how they can establish weekly date nights where both partners can connect, communicate, and re-establish whatever might have been lost in the hassles of their busy lives. In our last session, we had the privilege to individually pray for each couple in our group. To be able to pray for them, bless them and have some personal time encouraging them felt like such a wonderful way to close the 7-week course. "We pray for you, young people, wishing you God's best as you embark on this journey together. We are confident that you will not stop learning and blessing your own marriage so that you can become living testimonies for many more younger couples in time to come. May your pillars of marriage and family life be strengthened. May your strong and loving marriages be the building blocks of our church and society, reflecting the oneness of our triune God and giving glory to Him. Amen. Caleb & Lianne - Participants Growing up in a Christian family and being in church has made me aware of how God views marriage, and how spouses should interact and love each other. However, we know that no relationship is ever without its problems, and that includes ours. My fiancé, Caleb, and I signed up for the Marriage Preparation Course ahead of our wedding in January 2019, in the hope of learning more about each other, and building a good foundation for our marriage. And indeed, the course did not disappoint. Held over a span of two months in April and May, the course comprised weekly sessions where we learnt more about the Biblical basis of marriage, leaving and cleaving, how to communicate and manage conflicts, as well as practical topics like handling our finances after marriage. We appreciated the weekly group sharing sessions, where all the couples were split up into groups led by an older couple in the church. Our facilitators, Wai Choong and Le Peng, answered our questions frankly and honestly, and gave us practical advice on how to handle difficult situations such as our relationships with our in-laws. We also went through an assessment with a trained counsellor after each of us had filled out a detailed questionnaire. To us, that was the most interesting and beneficial part of the course – we learnt so much about our strengths and weaknesses as a couple, and how we can work through our weaknesses to grow stronger as a couple. Ultimately, as Caleb and I went through the course, we found ourselves growing closer to each other and understanding each other more as we discussed the course materials in our free time and learnt more about how each of us loves and wants to be loved in return. And as we came to understand more clearly the role God has ordained for each of us in our relationship, we found ourselves seeking God more and drawing closer to Him, to understand His will for us in our marriage. • 2008 TNG Official Launch

2008 TNG Official Launch Unveiling The Masterpiece Rev Peter Koh, Pastor-in-Charge, officially welcomed the congregation to the official launch of the TNG service, and shared with everyone the Vision, Mission and Guiding Principles of the TNG ministry. In his sermon, Rev Wee stressed the importance of family in determining our future. At the same time, he also highlighted that after we have received Christ as our Saviour and Lord, we are now responsible for our personal choices and decisions in life. He reminded the congregation that we have an earthly family and a spiritual family of brothers and sisters in Christ. In closing, Rev Wee invited all the parents to come forward for prayer and to receive from the Lord. He then invited the youth who needed prayer to stand along the aisles of the concert hall and asked the parents to come alongside the youth to pray and minister to them. "The official launch of the TNG worship service at PLMGSS is the realization of a vision to extend our pastoral and outreach ministry to the harvest field at PLMGS, which was birthed more than four years ago. Our partnership with the school, through our financial support in the building of the school's concert hall, has provided us with the opportunity to establish our TNG worship service there and also to relocate the entire TNG department at the school. This will help us to build and strengthen bonds of friendships with the students of the school and their families in the surrounding community at Lor Ah Soo. The "Masterpiece" Unveiled A change in leadership, a change in pastor a change in worship venue. The past several months have certainly seen many major changes in the TNG ministry. But through it all, we give praise to the Lord for His faithfulness and His ever watchful eyes on the TNG ministry, guiding providing and affirming the staff and team leaders on this journey of changes. This period of changes also brought with it a period of reflection, visioning and seeking the Lord's direction for the ministry. At the official launch of the TNG worship service at their new venue at the PLMGSS concert hall on 27 January 2008, Rev Peter Koh shared the new Vision, Mission and Guiding Principles of the ministry. The new Vision, "Every youth a masterpiece, destined to soar", based on Ephesians 2:10 & Isaiah 40:31, seeks to inculcate the identity of every youth in Christ. The youth leadership team feels that once every youth is established in who they are, they will want to rise up and realize the potential God has given them." • 1987 Personal Testimony

1987 Personal Testimony Ng Choon Hwee Choon Hwee is our Director of the Ministry to the Visually Impaired (MVI). If you wish to find out more about the Ministry to the Visually Impaired and how you can serve there, please drop Choon Hwee an email at mvi@plmc.org . I came from a non-Christian family and my first contact with Christians was through the Sunday School at the School for the Blind. Being from a non-Christian family background I soon began to dislike Christianity and this continued until my secondary school days when I began to have the attitude that as long as one did what was right and good, it did not really matter what religion one believed in. So I would sometimes support my Christian friends while at other times I would go against them. I became a Christian through the witness of Charles Quah, a member of our church, when I was in Pre-University one. For a while I was very active, participating in Sunday School, camps and bath Christian meetings for the blind. But then I began to question my faith and for about two years I struggled with questions about God's existence and His goodness. Thanks be to God for seeing me through this period of searching and thanks to my friends for supporting me with their prayers and encouragement. Then in 1984 I began to seek God's guidance about studying at the Singapore Bible College. I wanted to know more about God and have a closer walk with Him and to serve Him full-time if it was His will. My prayer then was that God would keep the door open if He wanted me to pursue a full time Bible course. The door was kept open and I enrolled at the Singapore Bible College in 1985. I have now been studying for one and a half years and God has been gracious in providing for my needs: To name one, He has provided volunteers to read to me. As a blind person, I am not able to read books in print and so have to depend on volunteers to read to me. Volunteers come and go but God has always ensured that I have enough readers. Besides, an overhead bridge was recently built outside the college making it possible for me to cross the road on my own. Without it, I would be stranded if no one is around. Furthermore; the Lord has also provided for me financially. Finally, with regards to my future ministry, I still do not know where I will serve. I believe God has a plan for me and I am waiting for the unveiling of that plan. In the meantime do remember my wife and me in prayer. Pray that Jesus will always be Lord of our lives. • PLMC Sponsors TTC Chair Chew Hock Hin

PLMC Sponsors TTC Chair Chew Hock Hin PLMC has made a commitment to sponsor S$1 million for a Professorship Chair at Trinity Theological College (TTC), the Chew Hock Hin Chair of Christian Doctrine. The S$1 million sponsorship will be disbursed over a 5year period, with a payout of $200,000 per year, beginning in 2008. The Lord has blessed PLMC richly throughout our 76 years, and as a family that is "Blessed to Bless", we are grateful for the opportunity to be able to bless TTC through this sponsorship. TTC is the main theological college in Asia for the equipping of people for the ministry of the church. Its mission is to educate and equip Christian leaders for the manifold ministries of the church across Asia. The multiplier effect of the ministry of TTC is evident in the students who graduate from its doors who go on to full-time ministry in churches in their home countries throughout Asia, spreading and teaching the Word of God to their people and their congregations. We have chosen to name the Chair after the late Rev Chew Hock Hin, in honour of PLMC's first and longest serving pastor, who served with us from 1929 - 1957. Rev Chew received Christ as a young man, endured family persecution and was even thrown out of the house by his father once, but simply would not give up Christ. He was truly a shepherd at heart; a pastor who visited his community at home to share the Gospel with them, and who knew his congregation by name. The late Mr Khoo San Hee, a long-time member of PLMC, remembered how Rev Chew came to visit his parents in their home a few times to preach the gospel and eventually, his parents accepted Christ. Dr Michael Loh, Honorary Steward, recalled how Rev Chew knew the children of the families who worshipped at PLMC, followed them through their school years, and even tracked the careers of his congregation. Rev Chew's involvement with education began when he was a pastor at PLMC, which was functioning from the Methodist Preparatory English School at that time. The school was later renamed Paya Lebar Methodist School, and his wife, Mrs Chew, became its first principal, while Rev Chew was the chaplin. Together, they reached out to, ministered to and brought many pupils to the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ. TTC has appointed Dr Roland Chia to the Chew Hock Hin Chair of Christian Doctrine. An induction service and inaugural lecture by Dr Chia was held on Monday, 21 July 2008 at TTC. Mr Edward Lo, PLMC's LCEC Chairman, paid tribute to Rev Chew Hock Hin at the service and the PLMC singers rendered an anthem "Great is thy faithfulness". • 2000 Beacon Interview with Pastor Jonathan Seet

2000 Beacon Interview with Pastor Jonathan Seet God Bless! Jonathan, Joyce and Jazlyn Seet Pastor We're g on na miss y ou! By the time you receive this issue of The Beacon, Rev Jonathan Seet and his family would have settled into their new home in New Jersey, United States. Our pastor, who had been with us for the last five-and-a half years, left with his family for a two-year study leave. The Beacon caught an interview with him before he left. Where will you be going? My family and I will be going to the United States for the next two years. My wife, Joyce, and myself have been admitted to Princeton Theological Seminary in New Jersey. Joyce will be doing a Master of Arts focusing on Christian Education while I will be doing a Master of Theology. My daughter who is now in Primary Two will be enrolled in a public school there. Share with us how you came to this decision. Not many knew that more than three years ago, I applied to go on study leave as I felt that I needed a break from the ministry. The Lord spoke to me clearly telling me that it was not time yet. Although the way was clear, I had to withdraw. Our church went on to complete the building project and also to come to a decision to spearhead a daughter congregation, HOPE (House Of Prayer and Evangelism) Methodist Mission in the North East of which I was involved in the project. As the preaching point project took shape, I felt the Lord speaking to me that like David in the Bible, I will be the one gathering the resources and people for the building of the temple but a Solomon will be raised to complete the building. The Lord further revealed to me that it was because He wanted HOPE to be for His glory alone. If I were to continue with the project, it may become my project. This message was confirmed by a very close friend who called me one week later with the exact same message. Because of this and some other events, and in consultation and with the blessings of the key leaders in the church, I made the decision to apply for study leave. I applied to a few places. By the divine grace of God, I was admitted to Princeton Theological Seminary. Princeton has also offered me their Presidential Scholarship which I have accepted. Will you be posted back to Paya Lebar after your leave ends? This all depends on the President of TRAC (Trinity Annual Conference) when I complete my studies. As a Methodist pastor, our appointment is on a year-to-year basis. Depending on the needs of the Conference and the leading of God, pastors are posted to the different churches. What are your memories of Paya Lebar Methodist Church? I must say that PLMC holds a very special place in my heart. This was the church that my parents were married in and where I was baptised as an infant almost 38 years ago. I have been a pastor for over nine years and five-and-a-half of my pastorate was in PL. When I first came to be a pastor here, I was apprehensive as to how I would be accepted back home. I thank God and all of you for accepting me as a pastor. I am grateful to God that all my fears were proven unfounded. I look back and thank God for the way we have grown in ministry and prayers. I recall with affection especially the building up of the Contemporary Service, HOPE Methodist Mission, the setting up of The Boys' Brigade in Rosyth School and Ponggol Primary. I thank God also for the way that He has released me into further ministry here especially in the prayer and deliverance ministry. The times we have shared together in fellowship and ministry are all carved into my heart as beautiful memories. I treasure the friendships and fellowship of the other two pastors and the staff. Many of you have become a very special part of our lives. There are so many things I remember fondly that if I go into specifics, there will be no end. Any regrets? My regret is that I did not have the time and capacity to get to know every worshipper. If I had unintentionally offended anyone in my interactions, I would like to ask for your forgiveness. How can we contact you? Once my address is ready, it will be left with the Church Office. Any last words? I want to thank you for the memories, the love and support for my family and me. Thank you! Do pray for us as we embark on a new phase in our lives. May the Lord bless Paya Lebar and grant a mighty renewal here as we grow in love and service for HIM! • 1989 VI Retreat

1989 VI Retreat A Retreat at Fraser's Hill 1989 Ng Choon Hwee Eight visually impaired and two sighted worshippers from our Church participated in a retreat organised by the Gospel Mission to the Blind. Together with other visually impaired brothers and sisters and some sighted helpers, we left for Fraser's Hill on the evening of 5th Dec 3 for a time of learning and fellowship. Planned entirely by the blind themselves, the retreat had as its theme, "The Marks Of A Disciple" covering topics like Love, Service And Evangelism. The workshop topics sparked off a lively and interesting discussion on Courtship, Marriage and Singlehood. There were also games, excursions and a campers' night which sprung many surprises. On the final evening, many came forward for prayer and to rededicate their lives. But the greatest joy for us all was to see yet another person receiving Christ and joining God's great family. The retreat was indeed an enjoyable one. The participants testified to this at the reunion held on 21st January 1989. Please do remember the visually impaired in your prayers. Pray for their spiritual growth and pray that God will raise up more men and women of God among us. • Young Adults | 2018 Your Work Matters

2018 Your Work Matters Gareth Tan Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts. - Acts 2:46-47 To start the year fresh with God’s perspective, PLMC’s Young Adult Ministry organized the first gathering for 2018 on 27 January. A respectable 113 Young Adults from the Community came together to fellowship, to worship and discover what God had in store for us as a family. After a time of deep and intense worship (led by Paul Khoo) calling us to surrender our lives and to commit the year ahead into God’s hands, Bishop Emeritus Wee Boon Hup shared on Your Work Matters – Vocation and Theology. Pastor Wendy encouraged us to continue to “Do Life Together”. As a Young Adult Family, we need not journey alone anymore. Rooted, we can grow deeply, producing a spiritual outflow. Our Young Adult Executive, Emanuel, shared the events lined up for the year, and encouraged us to move into groups based on our area of study/work, so that we could form synergistic communities that could support one another. I’m thankful that the Young Adult Community is starting to stabilize and form. New Young Adult cells transiting from the Youth Service were welcomed in, and it was heartening to see the entire Young Adult Community come together as one, taking shape under our Lord and King! During the ministry month, our hearts were tugged to visit cell groups. So, despite having only one close friend in the youth ministry, we plucked up our courage and signed up for the tea session. We are grateful that we went to the tea session and met people just like us during the breakout session. God helps us through the Holy Spirit and people in the same season of life. Come good or bad, we have brothers and sisters in Christ to rejoice with or seek support from. Thank you Emanuel, the pastors of PLMC and volunteers for organising this tea session. - Chen Siru & Jeremy Wong (newcomers to the YA community) During ‘Your Work Matters’, Rev Dr Wee Boon Hup spoke about the dissociation between the secular and the sacred, and the separation of work into the ‘spiritual estate’ and the ‘temporal estate’. I have been working for 5.5 years and currently taking a short sabbatical from work. As I felt emotionally drained from the working world, I felt the need to reflect and to find my direction. As Rev Wee spoke, I realized that in the past few years, I had led a working life that was self-seeking. Instead of focusing on the biblical and spiritual vision of work, my motivation for work was to seek achievements, success and validation from the world. I was encouraged to re-prioritize my Christian values in work and to see work as a gift from God. It made me change my perspective from one which views work as a drudgery to one where I am the servant of God to bring Kingdom values to the marketplace. The work I do matters to God and has eternal value. I am unsure where my next vocation would be but I believe that God has prepared the way. - Ruth Lee You may also like Share Testimony 2012 What do you know about the Middle East 2016 Becoming RALE Men Young Adults

  • Getting to know Pastor Kow Shih Ming

Getting to know Pastor Kow Shih Ming Please tell us about yourself and your family. I am happily married to Soh Wai & we have two beautiful daughters, Simone & Samantha who are 19 and 16 respectively and Butterscotch, our dog. I am passionate about preaching that changes lives, leadership that transforms churches and organisations, and spiritual formation that nourishes the soul. Personality-wise, I am an introvert. I have difficulty remembering names (including my own relatives) though I can remember most faces. So, please tell me your name a number of times; it helps me. How long have you been in ministry? Since August 1992. Before I went to seminary, I worked as an electronics engineer in a MNC. How do you see yourself as a pastor? Ephesians 4:11–13 (NIV) So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ. In keeping with Ephesians 4:11-13, I am to equip God’s people for ministry so that the body of Christ is built up and becomes mature in Christ. What do you do for fun and leisure? Spend time with my wife, with my kids; eat, read. I enjoy most racquet games but given my age & schedule, that has been laid aside. What do you like to eat? (Very important in PLMC) Seefood – I see food, I eat. Though I do enjoy eating almost anything, my present two favorite cuisines are Italian & Japanese. Local food – Among many, many that I like, what comes to mind at time of writing are yam cake & kueh salat, but they must be good. How can we support and pray for you? Share with me what God is doing in your life. Your story with Jesus will encourage me. Forgive me for the times when you feel that I have failed you; I am a saint in transition, going on to perfection by the grace of God. Pray for me what the Lord puts into your mind. If you don’t receive anything to pray about, pray that I will abide in Christ, rest in the Father’s presence and, discern and follow the leading of the Holy Spirit. Also lift up my family in prayer that they will experience God’s love more fully & they will love God more deeply. 2004 Cell Leaders Dedication Set Apart to Serve "Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will make you fishers of men.” (Matt 4:19) For Esther Loon, this verse always encourages her in her role as a co-leader of a cell group. Although she only joined a cell group in 2003, she decided to answer the Lord's call to serve in this ministry because she did not want to be just a typical Sunday Christian. Esther (far right), at the cell leaders Commissioning Service with (from left) Lim Lian Arn, Andrew Mak, James Chan and Sheldon Hee. Esther was one of the 10 cell leaders and co-leaders who were “set apart” for service in this ministry at the Commissioning Service held on 28 March 2004. A quiet and gentle lady, Esther is not your typical image of a cell leader. She acknowledges the Lord's guidance in her duties and responsibilities in this role. She feels that “heart knowledge” is more important than “head knowledge” when it comes to leading a cell. She is simply a FAST – faithful, available, submissive, teachable - Christian. She usually spends one week preparing for cell meetings. Leading a cell group of members who have known the Lord for many years, Esther sees herself as a prayer partner to her members. “Joining a cell has made me more committed to proclaim Jesus as Lord of my life to pre-believers at home and others meet, e.g. at the market, park,” she said. She has also learnt how to pray for others and been blessed by the prayers in her cell group. Esther also feels it is very important to build trustworthy relationships with others and to pray for them to be conscious of the Holy Spirit's renewing of their minds. This is her way of encouraging others to answer God’s call for more “shepherds” to tend to His flock of church members. She also encourages those who are not yet in cell groups to join one, citing Hebrews 10:24, 25 – “And let us consider how we may spur one another on towards love and good deeds. Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another -and all the more as you see the Day approaching.” You may also like Share Testimony 2004 Blessing the Community with Mooncakes GYM Cell Group
