  • 2013 Missions 80:80

2013 PLMC Celebrates Missions 80:80 Daphne Hong Thailand, Malaysia, Philippines, Indonesia, China, India and Myanmar – these are the nations where our church supports missionaries, national workers and organisations. MISSIONS 80:80 - TRANSFORMING LIVES was our missions initiative to thank God for His faithfulness to PLMC over the past 80 years. July 2012 to June 2013 saw 1,169 worshippers going on 126 missions trips to 13 nations and 30 June was a day set aside to praise God for stirring the hearts of His people to missions. Play Video Facebook Twitter Pinterest Tumblr Copy Link Link Copied Booths of these 7 nations were set up - each displaying photos and information about each country and past trippers' experiences. Future trips were promoted and brochures handed out containing information about upcoming trips. A video clip showcasing the various missions trips was also screened in the hall. The flags of 15 nations from as near as Malaysia and Indonesia to as far as Japan and Kazakhstan, were proudly displayed. To signify our church's missions support for these countries. Colourful national costumes were donned by our champions, members and even ushers that morning. The door gifts were a bookmark cum globe-shaped mobile phone screen cleaner, reminding members to "Declare His Glory among the Nations - Psalm 96:3a". A procession of different national flags started off the celebration service. Procession members were past mission trippers - 15 adults and 10 children. A video was shown of the various missions trips and Charlene Chew from the youth ministry gave a special presentation. Two children (Josiah and Sara-Ann), one youth (Charlene Chew) and an adult (Justin Cheong) sang the Preparatory song "Go Light Your World". They represented the children, youth and adults. Thereafter, Reverend Aaron Tay from Living Waters Methodist Church preached on "From Disciples to Apostles". The celebration was a success in many ways. As many as 150 members prepared and helped out for this special event. More than 30 members signed up for future missions trips. Indeed the festivities were not just to give thanks for successful past missions trips but also, to celebrate the beginning of many more to come. • Men's Ministry Retreat 2019

Men's Ministry Retreat 2019 Ken Chung The annual retreat was held on 14 September 2019 at the SAF Seaview Resort @ Changi. Once again, the Men’s Ministry (MM) brothers set aside time to come together to rededicate ourselves, examine closely our development as men based on God’s original blueprint for man in the beginning. We believe that God has called us to live the authentic manhood, to be real men who obey God’s Word, love and protect God’s women, engage in God’s work and better God’s world. We started the day with an extended time of worship, fixing our eyes on our Lord Jesus, led by the Holy Spirit, bringing praises to our Heavenly Father who loves us so much. We are forever grateful to His faithful work in changing our lives. In MM, we are never alone. We know that the lifelong authentic manhood journey is not for the faint of heart. It’s a steep climb at times, challenging, soul-searching, eye-opening and we need discipline and teammates in the process to cheer us on. Hence, strong brotherhood bonds are essential for building a safe space in the PLMC men’s community. With this in mind, our outdoor games were designed to facilitate collaboration, teamwork and communication. This year, we were honoured to have Ps John Koe from Petra Church to speak to us on Kingdom Mentality. Knowing our true identity which God has intended for us, we are ready to restore God’s kingdom in our place of influence. We were greatly blessed by his message. Reflection verse: Proverbs 29:18 NIV Where there is no revelation, people cast off restraint; but blessed is the one who heeds wisdom’s instruction. During the reflection and sharing session, we shared our thoughts, and thought more clearly and strategically how we could apply what we had learnt. Building a stronger family, loving our wives, raising healthy sons and daughters are our roles as men. Hence, at the end of the What brings us back to the MM Retreat year after year is our response to God’s unfailing love in changing us to becoming better men for our families, communities and God’s Church. We are true blessed and we want to be families that bless the community and the nation. You may also like Share Testimony Ministry to the Visually Impaired 2000 Church Camp Men's Ministry

  • 1988 Koh Tiong Tai Led Peranakan Service

1988 A Salute to Our Super-Energetic KOH TIONG TAI Ian Wong For those of you who’ve been attending the 7:45 am service, our one and only Mr Koh needs no introduction... Some of you may even recall Mt. Koh’s sparkling performance at last year’s Peranakan Nite-an event I’m sure most of us enjoyed. The Yesteryears Raised in a strict Taoist tradition, Mr Koh was educated at Anglo Chinese Methodist School which paved the way for his Christian faith. “I remember school chapels those days - distinguished speakers like Rev Goh Hood Keng and Rev Oldham '' reflected Mr Koh. Indeed in 1926, one of Rev Goh’s sermons so touched this young lad’s heart that he accepted Christ at the altar call. Soon his parents also became Christian during Dr John Soong’s (renowned Chinese Missionary) visit to Malacca. On that occasion, Mr Koh’s mother was miraculously healed of an eye ailment. The whole family was subsequently baptised in and absorbed into Kampong Kapor Methodist Church. A few years later saw Mr Koh meeting the later Rev Chew Hock Him. This contributed to the growth and improvement of the then Peranakan worship services. With the help of a few dedicated Christians from Geylang Straits Chinese Methodist Church (subsequently Pentecost Methodist Church), the Koh family organised a small worship group which gradually grew in numbers. There at Geylang where the family membered ws transferred, Mr Koh was soon appointed President of the First Epworth league (Youth Group), director of the First Choir and Local Preacher. In addition, Mr Koh also headed the Christmas carolling team. “We used to carol from dusk to dawn during the festive season and Singapore was a lot different then - in the 1930s” as Mr Koh elaborated. His interest in carolling took him to resume this responsibility for many years after the war. Mr Koh’s attachment with Geylang Straits Chinese Methodist Church continued right through the 50’s and ‘60s to 1975. Present Times The death of Rev. Wee Chin Kum of PLMC's Malay-Speaking Congregation spelt the need for leader assistance in this area. So in 1975, Mr. Koh joined PLMC on request by an elder, Mr. Chua Loon Chuan, and upon the latter's death, was appointed to head the Malay-Speaking Congregation. Mr Koh’s responsibilities here continues to this present day. Outside PLMC, Mr Koh’s involvement include visiting the sick, periodic contribution of Peranakan articles in the Methodist Message and attendances at Prayer and Praise Services organised by other churches. Well, on behalf of PLMCwe would like to thank Mr. Koh for being a Beacon in reminding us constantly of this need to “serve the Lord with a heart full of devotion” (Romans 12:11) You may also like Share Testimony 1991 New Peranakan Service 2018 Remembering John Lim Peranakan Service

  • 1993 Church Building Project

1993 Church Building Project A New Challenge For PLMC Chow Kok Fong ACQUISITION BY THE STATE Once again Paya Lebar has to brace itself for a new challenge. The land on which the church sanctuary currently stands will be acquired by the State in 1994 for a major road expansion project. After several months of representations to the authorities, the government eventually agreed to sell to the church the land on which the covenant centre is sited. (This land is currently leased to us under a temporary occupation licence.) The price and the other terms of the purchase remain to be negotiated. However, we thank God that this development removes at once a whole lot of uncertainty and anxiety. It moves forward quickly the agenda to get the new premises in place. DESIGN BRIEF Following the decision, a project design brief was drawn up. In essence this brief encapsulates our vision that Paya Lebar will grow into a 4,000 member church with a Sunday School attendance of 800. We also visualise a similar order of growth in our other outreach programmes such as the Family Service Centre and the Kindergarten. The new building premises will, therefore, have to cater to a Paya Lebar which is roughly twice the size of what we are today. Model of new church building THE SELECTED DESIGN Two architectural firms were invited to submit design proposals on the basis of this brief. In the end, the LCEC accepted the design proposal submitted by a team of young Singaporean architects. This proposal was considered to be more compatible with the character of Paya Lebar and lends itself to be constructed efficiently. The selected design is characterised externally by 3 components: the church sanctuary, the bell tower, and the covenant centre. All three combine to confer an unmistakably Venetian flavour of the external form. You may also like Share Testimony 1993 A Peep Into a Cell Group 1997 Thanksgiving Stones 1990s The Bell tower sits on a generous plaza which is designed to retain the social focus of the church. The whole plaza serves also as a pronounced entrance from Joon Hiang Road to both the sanctuary and the covenant centre. The sanctuary shall have two-tiered seating for up to 1,200 worshippers at any one time. The altar, cry room, choir, AVA room and supporting facilities have been expanded in the new sanctuary to varying degrees. The new covenant centre shall house a 400 seater contemporary worship hall. It shall also have 15 classrooms and two assembly halls for Sunday School. These should double up as kindergarten facilities during the week. The other facilities housed in the covenant centre includes a 200sq-metre library, the church offices and facilities for our social outreach programmes. Underpinning the entire complex will be a semi basement car park with 90 car park lots. This will extend over the larger part of the site. Basement construction is expensive and for this reason, it was thought that we should not proceed deeper than the single basement level. CONSTRUCTION COST The construction cost has been estimated by the quantity surveyors at $7.76 million. Consultancy fees, submission expenses and clerk of works supervision will cost another $670,000 making a total of $8.5 million. THE TASKS AHEAD The main activities in the coming months are these. We will need to finalise our requirements for the various facilities by the end of quarter 1993. This will permit the design and consultancy teams to develop the design. Simultaneously a series of value engineering exercises will be undertaken to trim down the cost estimate as much as possible. This includes looking into alternative technical solutions to each critical aspect of the project before committing to a particular solution. KEY DATES A key date will be the date when we take possession of the site. This will be when the boundaries of the covenant land site have been formally demarcated and it is expected to take place around the first quarter of 1994. We would like to begin piling the moment we have site possession and this is expected to last five to six months. We will need another 20 to 22 months following this for the building works proper (so called “main contract work”) to be completed. By scheduling these activities as close as possible to the date of the site possession, we can minimise the time we need to worship elsewhere as a church. On this schedule therefore, we aim to worship in the new premises by Christmas 1996. CHURCH UNITY Despite almost two decades of acquaintance in the construction industry, I expect this project to be a very sobering experience for me. It has helped me know my church leaders well and it has led me to understand their great love for Paya Lebar and God’s work in this part of Singapore. At the end of the day, I pray that even as we labour together to build the new premises, God will build up our faith and love in Him and for one another. The other members of the Building Subcommittee are Mr Henry Kwek (Vice Chairman), Dr NC Tan, Mr Lee Hon Leong and Mrs Shirley Kee (Secretary). You may also like Share Testimony 1993 A Peep Into a Cell Group 1997 Thanksgiving Stones 1990s

1972 40th Anniversary The Ministers' Message George Wan Tian Soo At this juncture in the life of our Church, we rejoice and give thanks to God for His guidance and blessings upon us as a congregation through the past forty years. We are what we are to-day because of the faithful labours of dedicated men and women, both ministerial and lay, who have contributed magnanimously and willingly their talents, time and resources towards the progress of the Paya Lebar Methodist Church. Rev. Dr. George Wan, his wife Bee Bee and son Joshua You may also like Share Testimony Numbering 78 Years 67th Anniversary Early Years We thank God for their faith, vision and service. May their life of dedication continue to be a source of inspiration and courage for our generation as we seek to share and preach the love of Christ in our day. Our task in the present age is tremendous. The teeming population in our Republic challenges us to new heights of endeavour. The new housing estates around our Church demand our attention and ministry. The social needs of the community should also be our concern. The call for more labourers is urgent because "the harvest is plenteous but the labourers are few" . Let us all put our shoulders to the wheel, each bearing his responsibility, that together we may be a Church "set upon a hill” , witnessing to the truth and love of God, and ministering to the needs of the society. May we, in our time, be found faithful to our calling as the two servants were at the return of their master. (Luke 25:14f) Bee Bee and I are glad to be in the service and fellowship of the Paya Lebar Methodist Church. We are thankful for all who are giving good leadership and faithful service in working together as co-labourers in His Kingdom. Pray for us and with us for a greater harvest in the days ahead. May God keep us all in His love. You may also like Share Testimony Numbering 78 Years 67th Anniversary Early Years

  • Christian Fellowship PLMGS

PLMGS Christian Fellowship CCA Reaching Out Heartbeat Sunday, 03 Dec 2006 Making Disciples of Jesus Christ The Great Commission - “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” - Matthew 28:19: Purpose Statement for PLMC's School Ministry in PLMGS (P) The School Ministry exists to reach pre-believers, to connect them to Christ's family, to raise up a succeeding generation to honour God, impacting communities and nations with Christ's love. Christian Fellowship (CF) CCA The objective of the CF is to nurture and disciple every believer, to raise up a generation of godly women of fine character to honour God and to impact communities and nations with Christ's love. The CF CCA meets every Tuesday from 1.30pm to 3.30pm. The majority of our girls are Christians, with a minority of pre-believers. Through God's grace, these pre-believers have now received Jesus as their Saviour and Lord. It is heartwarming to see our CF girls bringing their non-Christian classmates, with consent from their parents, to our fellowship. Praise God, they are learning how to 'fish' at a young age! God provided a stalwart team of co-labourers to run with me. As I reflect on His faithfulness in providing the labourers, I am overwhelmed with thankfulness and joy filled my heart! Judy Yeo, Jessie Yeo, Jessie Ong, Chin Choo, Elizabeth, Helen, Lily, Dawn and Anne have been running with me for the past two and a half years. Every Tuesday, despite the sweltering heat of the afternoon, they would labour out of love for the CF girls. Their rapport with the girls enables them to share the love of Jesus and those who were pre-believers have all received Jesus as their Lord and Saviour! Our Discipline Purpose Worship : To teach the girls to worship God in Spirit and in Truth. Guided reflection during worship enhances a deeper worship experience. The girls are encouraged to quiet their 'hearts' to learn to listen to God and to express their feelings and thoughts in 'love letters' to Him. It is indeed heart-warming to read their expressions of love and thanksgiving to God, giving me the calm assurance that His Word sown will not return void. It is a platform for them to glorify God with their heart-wrenching testimonies. Evangelism : Our girls are being equipped and challenged to share the gospel with their classmates, friends and relatives in a simple John 3:16' diagram. Role play is carried out too. They are taught how to ‘fish'! Fellowship : 1 remember vividly during one of the worship sessions, the manifested presence of God touched and convicted the heart of one of our girls. She asked me if she could testify. She had not treated her grandmother kindly when she was alive but felt condemned that she could not seek her forgiveness. I assured her of God's forgiveness through repentance and prayed for her. The Holy Spirit was moving powerfully amongst us, He convicted 5 other girls and they all began to weep as they experienced God's unconditional love and forgiveness. Not only did the girls weep, my co-labourers and I could not contain the tears as we experienced His tangible presence. It was indeed an awesome experience right in CF!
