  • 2006 Pastor Barnabas Chong

2006 Pastor Barnabas Chong "It was at a missions conference in 1987 that the Lord asked me if I would be willing to serve Him full time anywhere, anytime,” said Rev Barnabas Chong. Pastor Barnabas' reply was “Yes Lord, just tell me when it's time”. Eight years later, in 1995, the Lord told Pastor Barnabas “Now is the time”. Personal testimony Pastor Barnabas came to know the Lord at the age of 22 years. He had been attending church for about two years, and came to a point in his life when he faced a personal crisis. He spent nights seeking the Lord, knowing God only as a distant God who was "somewhere out there”. Then, one night, while agonizing in prayer, he felt God coming near, and knew at that moment that God was real. “I gave my life to the Lord that night, and told Him that even if He never shows up again in my life, I would still believe in Him and follow Him, as this one time experience of the great God revealing Himself to a sinner was more than enough,” declares Pastor Barnabas. After the Lord asked for his commitment in 1987, Pastor Barnabas continued to worship and serve at Shalom Gospel Hall, a local independent church, as he waited upon the Lord for his next step. It was in 1995, when he was working as an auditor and studying for his Australian CPA (Certified Practising Accountants) examinations, that God told him it was time for him to commence full time ministry. “I was reading about the role of the auditor, and felt in my heart that there was a mismatch between myself and what I was reading, and then I sensed the Lord saying “Now is the time,” says Pastor Barnabas. “I was so excited because I had been waiting for eight years and I could not wait to hand in my letter of resignation.” He then began full-time ministry at Shalom, first as a ministry staff and then, as an associate pastor. While serving at Shalom from 1995 - 1997, he also pursued the Master of Divinity programme part-time at Trinity Theological College. His journey into The Methodist Church “But at some point in 1997, I felt that the Lord wanted me to work towards ordination within a denominational church," said Pastor Barnabas. He then left Shalom to complete his theological studies at Ridley College, Melbourne, Australia. In his final year of studies, after much prayerful consideration, he wrote to Rev. Malcolm Tan, the Pastor-in-Charge at Barker Road Methodist Church (BRMC), who offered him a position as a lay ministry staff, with a view to becoming a pastor after 2 - 3 years. So, upon his graduation, he joined BRMC as a full-time staff in 2000. In August 2002, Pastor Barnabas was appointed to serve as assistant pastor at Faith Methodist Church, providing pastoral leadership to the youth ministry and prayer ministry of the church. The path to PLMC Pastor Barnabas believes that coming to PLMC is part of a journey that began two years ago. It was a gift, a question, a disappointment and a surprise over a twelve-month period, beginning in November 2004, which finally led him to PLMC. As he enters a new phase of his spiritual journey with the Lord at PLMC, Pastor Barnabas is filled with expectation of what God is going to do, in his own life and in the lives of the church members, at PLMC. His passion "My desire is to see revival in our generation!” declares Pastor Barnabas. “To see hundreds and thousands of people coming to the Lord, "back-slidden” believers returning to the Lord, non-believers getting saved, signs and wonders which no one can deny." What Pastor Barnabas would really like to see is the day when a non-believer enters the church and, witnessing the fellowship of believers and exercise of the gifts of the Spirit, bows down and declares “truly God is amongst you!" (1 Cor 14:24,25) His motivation “My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit's power, so that your faith might not rest on men's wisdom, but on God's power."- 1 Cor 2:4-5 This is the verse that inspires, encourages and motivates Pastor Barnabas as it speaks of what God can and will do through His servants who are wholly consecrated to Him. • 2018 Men's Ministry Retreat

2018 Men's Ministry Retreat Ken Chung The PLMC Men's Ministry (“MM”) spent two days from 31 Aug to 1 Sep 2018 at the SAF Seaview Resort for a retreat. Traditionally, MM retreats are intentionally scheduled over a Friday and Saturday so that we will set aside time away from our work and family, to seek God, reflect on our unique design, how we are wired and fill out our life compass. During this retreat, we had the opportunity to interact with other men, and think more clearly and objectively about our lives. As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another. - Proverbs 27:17 Men need ongoing adventure “to stay alive”, hence, the 2-day retreat was packed with events that helped us connect with God and each other through worship, teaching, ministry time, outdoor games, movies and feasting together at the famous Changi Food Center. This year, we were honoured to have Bishop Emeritus Dr Wee Boon Hup as our guest speaker. He spoke on what it means to have a healthy and robust marriage - “The Marriage That Glorifies God” . We were greatly blessed by his message. One of our MM brothers found the MM series so beneficial to him that he invited his father to the retreat. Though this brother’s birthday happened to fall on the first day of the retreat, he stayed throughout the retreat, and we also took the opportunity to celebrate his birthday together. At the end of the retreat, we invited our family members to a BBQ dinner. The BBQ was prepared by men, served by men, to honour our wives and children. What brings us back to the MM Retreat year after year is our desire to go deeper in knowing what God had in mind when He first brought Man into the world, to journey with like-minded men who seek to be the R.A.L.E. men for God and our family. (Join MM Series 1 to find out what is a “real man” is from a biblical perspective). We may never be perfect, but we are willing to journey together, and encourage one another to finish this race victoriously together. We would like to thank the Organizing Committee who had worked tirelessly to put together such a great event. We also thank God for the wonderful weather which enabled us to carry out the activities smoothly. • 2017 Children's Ministry Easter Celebration

2017 Children's Ministry Easter Celebration Carolyn Lee Silver Boxes The theme for the Junior Easter Event was - "You are valuable” portrayed in a skit where a boy finds out from his grandfather what the meaning of being precious and invaluable is. Jesus has given each of us a precious and invaluable gift - Eternal Life. Will each of us receive this gift of Eternal Life? After the skit, Don Yeo shared how fearfully and wonderfully each of them was made, and asked if they would allow God to help them, change their fears and place them at Jesus' feet, and receive His gift of love. We thank God that forty-two children in the Junior Department accepted Jesus as Lord and Saviour. At the end of the session, each child was given an egg, to signify new life, and a verse for them to keep. The theme for the Kindy event was - "Walk where Jesus walked". The skit related the Easter story through the eyes of a journalist, and the children were taken back to what happened 2000 years ago, and given the opportunity to accept Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour. Praise the Lord that seventy children accepted Jesus as Lord and Saviour. • Getting to know Pastor Jacob Lim

Getting to know Pastor Jacob Lim Rev Jacob Lim joined PLMC as a pastor on 1 Jan 20. Heartbeat caught up with Ps Jacob and here are the answers to some burning questions you might have, but were too paiseh to ask him. Please tell us about yourself and your family. I am an only child. My mum is not well-educated but she loves me with her all. In Jun 2017, shortly before entering pastoral ministry, I got married. My wife, Charmaine, whom I met in Trinity Theological Collage (TTC), serves as pastoral staff with Barker Road Methodist Church. We treasure our family time and make overseas trips together. Time is a gift from God and before our time runs out, I hope to have many shared fun-filled memories with them. What has your journey towards ministry been like? With much fear and trembling, I was progressively set up by God to enter the pastoral ministry. It had never crossed my mind that I would be a pastor. It never crossed the mind of my mum either. My mum's supervisor at work thought it was a prank when she applied for leave to attend my ordination. In 2006, after being serious with my walk with God, I prayed to be a good Christian: work hard in life and serve God faithfully. In these early formative years of my Christian walk, I took up the challenge to read the entire bible 6 times over 18 months. That spurred my desire to pursue theological education with the intention to know God better and deeper. Still, it had not crossed my mind to be a pastor. As God progressively opened the door for theological education, my then pastor, Rev Lai Kai Ming, asked me what my plans would be should I enter theological education. "Be a good Christian," I replied. "How about considering Pastoral Ministry?" he asked. "NO!!! I am not cut for it. Pastors are eloquent and are role models for many. Not me!" I thought I would be more of a stumbling block than a role model. One morning, as I was seeking God for clarity, a sense of assurance came upon my heart. It was not about stumbling block or role model. It was not about me. It was about faithfulness to God. I knew God was pointing me to this path - Via Dolorosa. I entered TTC through a bridging test (my highest qualification then was 'O' level) and completed the Bachelor of Divinity. At the beginning of each semester I prayed, "God, you set me up for this. I don't know how to go through this semester. You have to help me since You got me into this." With fear and trembling, I graduated and became a pastor. How do you see yourself as a pastor and where do your passions lie? Ephesians 4:12 is the kind of pastor I think God wants me to be. One who is interested in the lives of individuals, discovering each person's ministry passion and desire, and seeing them flourish in their God-given calling. A pastor who will value the individual and honour the needs of the ministry. I am a firm believer in the importance of family. Many stories of broken lives can be traced to dysfunctional families. I can't change the family situation, but I hope that the Word of God can be a firm anchor to the individual battling through life's storms. I hope the spiritual family in Christ will be the tower of refuge, a means of restoration. What do you do for fun and leisure? I LOVE household chores... (joking!). I like to go for long, quiet drives, and spend time at the beach/pool under the sun with a good book. I like movies, too, except for horror. What do you like to eat? (Very important in PLMC) Lor Mee, Buah Keluak, Steak, Snacks, and the list keeps going on. I only don't eat bittergourd (I can't take hardship/bitterness) . How can we support and pray for you? Thank you for this kind, yet needed, gesture. Pray that I will always walk humbly with God, love others, and be faithful in all that I am entrusted with. Also, that I will form deep and godly relationships with you at PLMC. You may also like Share Testimony 2020 Facing Covid-19 Numbering 78 Years 2010 - 2021

  • 2013 Migrant Workers Outreach

2013 Migrant Workers Outreach Being Channels of God's Blessings to Friends at Tai Seng Peter Ng I had always wanted to "Do something for God" . He has done so much for me and I felt it was time to reciprocate with a little more than just weekly worship and tithes. The lingering question was where I should serve. Two months back, there was an appeal by the church for volunteers to reach out to the migrant workers. What made it easier for me to respond was that I knew the contact person, Mary Chai. It was an opportunity to help foreign workers learn English. I thought, “Why not?” HealthServe is an organisation that advocates the welfare of migrant workers. IT provides a community space for them to gather after each workday. In Tai Seng, HealthServe targets some 5,000 Bangladeshi workers living in the neighbourhood. We strive to befriend them and pray that in time, seeds of God's love will be planted. Thus far, it has been a rewarding experience to partner with Jesus to care for the foreigners in our land. Over one weekend, PLMC volunteers worked alongside two Bangladeshi friends to transform HealthServe's industrial space into a more welcoming place. They painted, added new furniture, and carpet. Two others from PLMC helped to set up 10 workstations donated by a polytechnic for the Bangladeshis and mainland Chinese to access Facebook and other social media sites. Since we started about a month ago, we've been helping Bangladeshi workers to learn computer skills. They can now create simple documents on WordPad, and electronically attach photos and write emails. It is encouraging that they want to learn more and the PLMC volunteers are willing to share their knowledge. The volunteers comprised an active NS man, teachers, a homemaker, students, office personnel, and newly retired professionals. God loves the Bangladeshi and is willing to work through volunteers like us to be His channels of blessings. I am increasingly finding the Bangladeshi to be just like us. However, unlike us,they need to work far away from home to support their families. In November, we plan to take our Bangladeshi friends cycling in Pulau Ubin. 1998 Coming Home First Combined Worship Service at Boundary Road Hexacon handover of Paya Lebar Methodist Church On 15 Oct 98, Hexacon Construction Pte Ltd officially handed over the whole church complex. This ceremony was witnessed by the pastors and those who have been involved in the church building project in their various capacities. 10.00am * Sunday * 25 October 1998 Although the combined service was at 10.00am, church members started arriving by 9.00am. Most were happy just to explore the new church complex. By 10.00am, the sanctuary that could seat about 1,400 was packed to the brim and many had to stand throughout the service. After the service, many lingered to look for their Thanksgiving Stones, even the kids were fascinated by these memorials to God’s faithfulness and goodness. For those of us who were packed like sardines in the pews, the combined choir's anthem was a refreshing respite. The full-house scenario was repeated at the gallery and the cry room. • 2006 101st Company of The Boys' Brigade

2006 101st Company of The Boys' Brigade Sure and Steadfast Jeffrey Khaw Assistant Chaplain, 101st Boys' Brigade Company To build men who will stand sure and steadfast for the glory of God. The 101st Company of the Boys' Brigade (BB) has barely passed the first half year of its existence. Yet, various major activities have taken place which have bonded relationships between the Boys and officers. There was the trip to Rangsit Methodist Church, which exposed our Boys to church life in a different culture, and also to the Thai Boys' and Girls' Brigades of that church. Next came the annual Sharity Gift Box project, which saw the Boys working for weeks to ensure that delivery of the items to the needy families were taken care of. In the process, they learnt the importance of giving and sharing, and also the skill of working and cooperating in a group to get the work done efficiently. With the many events planned for the rest of this year, the Company is confident to impart invaluable experiences and to carve in the minds of those who come our way, memories that will last a lifetime. Through the Eyes of an Officer The Boys' Brigade (BB) is more than a voluntary organisation. It has proven to be a ministry that finds its influence in touching and changing the lives of the Boys that come under the wings of the officers. Somehow, the BB has touched the lives of the officers as well. Through the various meetings and fellowship sessions, we now see ourselves, not as mismatched individuals, but as a supportive group helping each other through parades, the frustrating times and also in our personal lives. 'To lead by example' - with fellow officers such as these, we are sure we can. Reflections from a Boy I recall the childish actions of my past, where games and personal adventures were all that mattered. Leadership and my responsibility toward others did not occur to me until I was prompted by the BB to take on roles that required me to lead. Through this, I managed to gain confidence in myself and discovered the potential for leadership that I did not know existed in me. Through the drill sessions, I was taught discipline. Through the various lessons, I was taught life skills. Mostly importantly, through the BB, I was brought to Christ. • 1985 WSCS Flower Stewards

1985 WSCS Flower Stewards Cheah Seing Hoo At every worship service, the altar is beautifully decorated with flowers. This is the effort of a group of lady members from our congregation who serve as flower stewards. The idea of having flower stewards was brought up four years back, after the congregation felt that the florists who supplied flowers to the church every Sunday made very stereotyped arrangements. So in January 1981, Mrs Iris Khoo formed the flower stewards ministry with 10 members from the WSCS. Miss Ong Han Nah was invited to teach the ladies the basics of flower arrangement. She gave 8 lessons over a period of 2 months and since then, the flower stewards have been doing the arrangements by themselves every Saturday afternoon in the church's kitchen. Flowers are either bought from the florist or the market, and are arranged with sticks and baskets. The profusion of carnations, roses and orchids so pleasantly presented, do much to brighten our Sunday worship and add colour to the sanctuary. If you would like to join the flower stewards in their ministry, meet the ladies on Saturdays at 5pm in the church kitchen or call Mrs Iris Khoo. • 2005 Blessing the Community

2005 Blessing the Community B2B Chinese New Year Block Party Celebration Stephen Yeo We want to thank God for bringing so many residents to our B2B CNY dinner on 20 February 2005. Many came with hearts open to the gospel and some came with burdens too. I want to testify and thank God for the opportunity for Dawn, Christine and myself to lead Mdm Tan and her son to Christ. They were open and friendly, and this led me to ask them whether they wanted to accept Christ in their lives after a very simple sharing of the gospel. Praise God for their decision to accept Him as their personal Lord and Saviour! We were overjoyed and are very excited about it! We seek your help to keep them in prayer. Pray with us that they will stand firm in their decision for Christ, as they came from a Taoist background. You may also like Share Testimony 2006 Boys' Brigade Missions Outreach

  • 1996 Rev Wee Boon Hup's Message

1996 Rev Wee Boon Hup's Message Moving House Several times in our lives we participate in events which have great historic significance. Often we are not aware of their significance until the events have passed. Rarely are we conscious that we are in the process of making history. We are right now in the process of making history with the building of our new church complex. It is a history of some significance because the complex will stand out as a landmark in this part of the island. Future development along the north-eastern corridor will see the Church as an integral part of the landscape. More important, however, than our Church being just a physical landmark is the contribution we make to the social and spiritual landscape. Our vision must be to shape our Church into a people who transform the community. Buildings are for people. A church is a people. A church building is for God's people to fulfil His mission for them. A great part of that mission with the new church complex will be to touch the lives of people in our community. Present ministries will be further developed and new ones initiated in order to achieve this. In believing that we can fulfil that mission effectively, we must expect and make room for growth. Hence the necessity to develop to the maximum whatever land we have. While we may be in the process of making it, history will also judge us in the end. When that happens, let it be found that we were faithful in our stewardship and in our mission. To God be the Glory.
