2006 Pastor Barnabas Chong

"It was at a missions conference in 1987 that the Lord asked me if I would be willing to serve Him full time anywhere, anytime,” said Rev Barnabas Chong. Pastor Barnabas' reply was “Yes Lord, just tell me when it's time”. Eight years later, in 1995, the Lord told Pastor Barnabas “Now is the time”.

Personal testimony

Pastor Barnabas came to know the Lord at the age of 22 years. He had been attending church for about two years, and came to a point in his life when he faced a personal crisis. He spent nights seeking the Lord, knowing God only as a distant God who was "somewhere out there”. Then, one night, while agonizing in prayer, he felt God coming near, and knew at that moment that God was real. “I gave my life to the Lord that night, and told Him that even if He never shows up again in my life, I would still believe in Him and follow Him, as this one time experience of the great God revealing Himself to a sinner was more than enough,” declares Pastor Barnabas.

After the Lord asked for his commitment in 1987, Pastor Barnabas continued to worship and serve at Shalom Gospel Hall, a local independent church, as he waited upon the Lord for his next step. It was in 1995, when he was working as an auditor and studying for his Australian CPA (Certified Practising Accountants) examinations, that God told him it was time for him to commence full time ministry. “I was reading about the role of the auditor, and felt in my heart that there was a mismatch between myself and what I was reading, and then I sensed the Lord saying “Now is the time,” says Pastor Barnabas. “I was so excited because I had been waiting for eight years and I could not wait to hand in my letter of resignation.”

He then began full-time ministry at Shalom, first as a ministry staff and then, as an associate pastor. While serving at Shalom from 1995 - 1997, he also pursued the Master of Divinity programme part-time at Trinity Theological College.

His journey into The Methodist Church

“But at some point in 1997, I felt that the Lord wanted me to work towards ordination within a denominational church," said Pastor Barnabas. He then left Shalom to complete his theological studies at Ridley College, Melbourne, Australia. In his final year of studies, after much prayerful consideration, he wrote to Rev. Malcolm Tan, the Pastor-in-Charge at Barker Road Methodist Church (BRMC), who offered him a position as a lay ministry staff, with a view to becoming a pastor after 2 - 3 years. So, upon his graduation, he joined BRMC as a full-time staff in 2000. In August 2002, Pastor Barnabas was appointed to serve as assistant pastor at Faith Methodist Church, providing pastoral leadership to the youth ministry and prayer ministry of the church.

The path to PLMC

Pastor Barnabas believes that coming to PLMC is part of a journey that began two years ago. It was a gift, a question, a disappointment and a surprise over a twelve-month period, beginning in November 2004, which finally led him to PLMC. As he enters a new phase of his spiritual journey with the Lord at PLMC, Pastor Barnabas is filled with expectation of what God is going to do, in his own life and in the lives of the church members, at PLMC.

His passion

"My desire is to see revival in our generation!” declares Pastor Barnabas. “To see hundreds and thousands of people coming to the Lord, "back-slidden” believers returning to the Lord, non-believers getting saved, signs and wonders which no one can deny."

What Pastor Barnabas would really like to see is the day when a non-believer enters the church and, witnessing the fellowship of believers and exercise of the gifts of the Spirit, bows down and declares “truly God is amongst you!" (1 Cor 14:24,25)

His motivation

“My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit's power, so that your faith might not rest on men's wisdom, but on God's power."- 1 Cor 2:4-5

This is the verse that inspires, encourages and motivates Pastor Barnabas as it speaks of what God can and will do through His servants who are wholly consecrated to Him.
