2006 Silver Boxes Our "Silver Boxes" - encouraging everyone to 'light your world. The Silver Boxes Ministry of PLMC, the new name for the Children Ministry, was unveiled at the Sunday worship services on 13 August 2006. Some children were spotted wearing trendy black T-shirts with the "Silverboxes” logo printed on them. There was an air of expectation in the Sanctuary when the children from Church School gathered at the front of the Sanctuary before the 9.00 am Sanctuary Service and the 11.15 am Celebration. Those who attended the PLMC-sponsored musical, Children's Letters to God, a week earlier on 4 & 5 August 2006 may have guessed at what was brewing in the Children Ministry when the name "Silver Boxes” appeared on the Show tickets, as well as in the souvenir programme. You may also like Share Testimony 2012 Arise Camp 2009 Sonshine Kids Children's Ministry Launching the new name and identity for the ChildrenMinistry at the Sanctuary services and the Mandarin Service, Rev Barnabas Chong, the pastor in charge overseeing the Ministry, highlighted that the name “Silver Boxes” was chosen as it represents encouragement . Just as a gift in a silver box, given to someone brings encouragement and joy, the Silver Boxes Ministry is the place where encouragement, friendship and godliness abound. Even the children and the teachers are “Silver Boxes” for the Lord, encouraging one another and lifting one another out of tough situations. Why Silver Boxes? A silver box is a symbol of encouragement. When you give someone a gift wrapped in a silver box, it brings encouragement and joy to that person. The PLMC Children Ministry - Silver Boxes - is the place where encouragement, friendship and godliness abound. Not only do we give away "silver boxes” to encourage others, our children and committed leaders are ‘silver boxes’ for the Lord. Encouraging people and lifting them up out of tough situations is our passion. Our dream is for every child, by the time they leave Silver Boxes, to become an authentic generous encourager with the encouragement they have first received from the Lord. "Silver Boxes" is a name derived from Florence Littauer and the book is all about encouragement. What ‘s New? This update is new! With the new name, there is also a new passion in ministry- ENCOURAGEMENT! Our ministry basis is taken from 1 Thess.5:11 - “Therefore encourage one another and build each other up…'' The preceding v.10 tells us that Jesus died for us so that we may live together with Him. What this means is we passionately encourage one another and build each other up Because we have been first encouraged by Jesus who died for us to give us eternal life. This new passion, or some may call it - renewed passion, Encouragement they have first received from will affect all that we do, from worship to outreach, from learning together to serving one another, from having fun to how we relate with one another. We have, for instance, introduced our first encouragement card with a beautiful picture drawn by one of our children and all children have been encouraged to write a note of thanks and encouragement to their parents. Did you get one? Sure hope you did. We are also working on songs for Silver Boxes, organising a retreat. (called the Silver Boxes Build Up) to build up our leaders and volunteers, fine-tuning our 2007 curriculum, etc. You may also like Share Testimony 2012 Arise Camp 2009 Sonshine Kids Children's Ministry

PLMC Missions Vision 2025 Proclaiming God’s Kingdom in Asia westward towards Jerusalem Heng Cho Hiong For a long time, the theme for PLMC’s Missions has been 123Go, which was based on Genesis 12:1-3 where God called Abraham to go into the nations. Just like Abraham, PLMC heard God and left on pioneering missions in the neighbouring regions. Over the last 2 years, PLMC Missions ministry entered a period of seeking God’s voice, which led to a new ministry vision and strategy. It began in March 2016, when our missions leadership, led by PIC Rev Dr Jonathan Seet and Ps Lynette, PLMC’s pastor overseeing missions, gathered in our sanctuary prayer room to seek God through prophetic art and meditative prayer. The leaders shared what they sensed God saying over the Missions ministry in the next season. I shared that the Lord impressed upon me a scripture message for our church during Sunday worship just the week before: Revelations 3:7-12, a letter to the church of Philadelphia. The leaders sensed that God is encouraging PLMC to persevere further in our missions effort and to seize the many missions opportunities that God will open to us. As we strengthen our stakes in our missions program and resources, God wants us to enlarge and stretch our missions footprint westward towards Jerusalem. The fireplaces represent the many churches in the nations. The coals depict gifts and abilities given to the church and the flame is the Holy Spirit. The little flames in the dark background represent our missionaries and worshippers going borderless to bring coals and flames to the churches and communities in the nations. As they return, they also bring the flames back to our church and for the body of Christ to stand united in this season. It is a reminder of the ten virgins burning their lamps in wait for the bridegroom of Christ. He is returning soon and there is much urgency. PLMC Missions Leadership Hearing God’s Voice for Missions – 19 March 2016 “Coals & Flames” – Prophetic Art for PLMC Missions. Over this period, we also spent time listening to our missionaries and members active in short-term-missions to sense where God is leading us in the field. Subsequently in Sept 2016, the Missions Committees members came together to consolidate what we heard over this period and formulated our Missions focus and direction for the next 7 years with the PLMC Missions Vision 2025 statement: “A missional church proclaiming the Kingdom of God among the least-reached peoples in Asia westward towards Jerusalem.” Missional Church: Majority of PLMC members and worshipers being pro-active in outreach and missions. Least-reached peoples: People groups with limited indigenous believing Christians to evangelize within the group without outside help. Reference: Joshuaproject.net Asia: Nations in Southeast Asia, South Asia, Northeast Asia & Central Asia, from Singapore westward towards Jerusalem. The 2025 Vision is to be achieved through three strategic thrusts: Creative access to the least-reached people groups Effective engagement of field and missions partners Extensive mobilization of PLMC members and worshippers Over the last year, God has opened up new missions opportunities through partnerships with Missions agencies such as SCGM, WEC and OMF. We organised Missions talks by the agencies and they led us in trips to new field locations in East Asia. Our revised Missions policy, which will enable the execution of the Missions strategies, is being finalised and will be revealed soon. 1992 Thai Missions Reaching Out to the Thai After several weeks of training, our missions team left for Thailand to minister. The following are their reflections: Michael Lim (A Medical Doctor and Teacher of PLMC's Young Adult Bible Class): "I have learnt a lot while visiting churches, Christian homes and schools in Thailand. Perhaps the next time when we have visitors from overseas, we should bring them to our churches and homes too. Then, they will be able to encourage us and be encouraged themselves too." Serene Lowe (An Interior Designer): "I became more conscious of the use of time after coming back from Thailand. I appreciated the simplicity of lifestyle there; making do without things like air conditioners or television sets, but only with the basic necessities. I really have a renewed sense of urgency to make good use of my time and to reach out to people with the Gospel." Wee Yin Choo (A Sunday School Teacher): "My faith was tested in Thailand because I had to learn to adapt to a new culture and I found learning a new language very difficult. Nevertheless, I found this trip helpful for my future decisions, whether to be a freelance missionary or to join a missions agency." Iris Sin (A School Teacher and the Secretary to the Missions Committee): "I was very impressed by Pastor Parkson's (a Thai Pastor who opened his house to the Team) humility and his sense of urgency to share the Gospel. I sensed that he was always excited by and mindful of opportunities to share the Gospel." You may also like Share Testimony 2004 Mae Sot, Thailand 2011 Friends of Jesus Missions

  • 2020 Facing COVID-19

2020 Facing COVID-19 Goliath: A David's Perspective Vera Lim The respiratory illness, which started in China in late 2019 had spread to a number of countries across Asia and the world. On Sunday 9 February 2020, I strolled into Paya Lebar Methodist Church with my family. This was my first time back in church after the CNY break as we had been away in Indonesia to visit my in-laws. Given the number of cases in Singapore, it was reasonable to expect an atmosphere of fear and speculation of how potent the virus could be and how fast it would spread. Yet, as I entered the Sanctuary on that morning, the believers who were present did not seem too perturbed or concerned. My sense of calm dissipated into concern that very same evening as the Ministry of Health reported Case 41 as an elderly man who had “visited Paya Lebar Methodist Church prior to his hospital admission”. Immediately, questions raced through my mind and I wondered, "Why did this incident take place in this Sanctuary? Why did it happen?" As I prayed and I sought the Lord over the next few days, the Holy Spirit reminded me of the story of David and Goliath. In 1 Samuel 17:4 , we were told that a champion named Goliath came out of the Philistine camp. Goliath was not your average enemy; he was over nine feet tall and had a bronze helmet on his head and wore a coat of scale armour of bronze weighing more than 58 kilograms; he even had protections for his legs. He challenged the Israelites. He taunted them and asked for one of Saul’s men to come down and fight him. Upon hearing these challenges, Saul and all the Israelites “were dismayed and terrified” (1 Sam 17:11). The COVID-19 is, in many ways, similar to Goliath. COVID-19 is a corona-virus and it has a “crown” which allows it to attach to the host. It looks formidable, like Goliath, but the fatality has been relatively low (less than 2% worldwide) . Yet, who can come against this Goliath? Who do we have in our camp? In the story of 1 Samuel 17, a little shepherd boy David assured King Saul, “let no one lose heart on account of this Philistine, your servant will go and fight him”. What did this shepherd boy bring to fight Goliath? Was it with the coat of armour and the bronze helmet that Saul gifted him? This shepherd boy went in the name of the Lord and in verse 45, he said to Goliath, “I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel” . Truly, our battle with this Goliath will be won, for this battle is the Lord’s. Be encouraged and know that as David the shepherd boy defeated Goliath, our God will save us. May we have the childlike faith of a shepherd boy in facing this Goliath. You may also like Share Testimony 1989 5th Anniversary 1916 History of PLMC 2010 - 2021

  • 2004 A Season of Prayer

2004 A Season of Prayer Ministry Movements Isaiah 62:6-7 "I have posted watchmen on your walls, O Jerusalem; they will never be silent day or night. You who call on the LORD, give yourselves no rest, 'and give him no rest till he establishes Jerusalem and makes her the praise of the earth." Our 24/7 prayer chain began on 6 September 2004. This is our response to God's call for PLMC to pray and praise Him 24-hours a day, seven days a week. This call was made to us through the Rev Terry Tekyl when he preached at our church on 20 June 2004. Over 140 church members have made the commitment to pray for one hour a day, covering every hour of the day for seven days of the week. This season of prayer will bring us to the end of this year. Our prayer emphasis is for the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on our church members, for a revival of our church where signs and wonders and miracles by the Holy Spirit will take place to draw unbelievers to church to worship God, and for a prayer culture to exist in our church. A special prayer room, fitted with security features and air conditioning, has been built at the Fellowship Hall. A selection of worship songs and prayer pointers are provided in the room to guide those who are praying. Truly God Deserves Our Praise and Worship – 24/7! Yvonne Loh On the Sunday in June 2004 that I heard Rev Teykl preach, I laughed so hard at his jokes that I was in tears. But his message on the power of praise and worship struck a chord in me and I was moved. When he spoke about the work of God in moving people to come to church for an hour a week just to worship Him and commune with Him so that at all hours of the day, there would be someone in church just glorifying Him, I was challenged to be a part of it. You may also like Share Testimony 2004 Miracle Healing 2008 WSCS WPSD 2000s I chose a 5am week-day slot as I reasoned that after years of being “on call” at night as a medical professional, I would be able to get up easily even at odd hours, something that others may not be able to commit to. I knew that the “unearthly hours” would be unpopular and difficult slots to fill. Although there are days when I feel like turning off the alarm clock and catching another hour's sleep, I am glad that I am a part of this. I feel blessed by having communed with Him. I believe that there has been a change in the spiritual atmosphere of our church since the wave started. There is a momentum that is beginning to gather and it is just a matter of time before revival will visit our church, not if. I have felt a difference as I lead worship at the Celebration service, because God is moving in the midst of us. Someone is in the closet interceding for us while the service is going on – and I believe that has made an impact. I also believe that every remaining slot on the wave must be filled and when it happens, a breakthrough will come as it demonstrates our unity and commitment before God. I am looking forward to the day when our members want to join the wave but there aren't any slots left and we will have to get another wave going in another venue and there will be many waves running concurrently. I am excited by what God is doing and truly glad I am a part of it. Indeed God is deserving of all glory and worship: 24/7! My Best Decision for 2004 Robert Chan My decision to participate in the 24/7 prayer wave was the best one I made in 2004. My slot is 4am every Monday morning. You may think that this is the best time for sleeping, but I am already used to the weekly LCEC leaders' prayer meeting at 5.30am. Somehow, God placed the burden in my heart that He wants me to give Him the best in everything, even in the choice of a time slot for the one hour of prayer. God will honour and bless us when we surrender our all in obedience to His word and let the Holy Spirit minister to us. The guidelines provided in the 24/7 prayer room make the one hour communion with God in praise and prayer very easy. Personally, I find the one hour session too short and I have also heard others participating in the prayer wave saying the same thing. It's a time of praising Him and a privilege to intercede for our national and church leaders, various church ministries' programmes and the affairs of the world. It is truly an hour of blessing being in God's presence. After each prayer session, my heart is always at peace, knowing that God will take care of my daily needs and help me to face the tremendous challenges at my work place. Words cannot describe the wonders and blessings that God has done in my life. You just have to experience it for yourself. Praise God that we, as a church, have decided to continue the 24/7 prayer wave in 2005. I want to encourage every member and worshipper to venture into this experience with God and be blessed. Remember that if you place God first, He will enable you to give Him the time to participate in the most exciting ministry in PLMC. I have always experienced God's abundant blessings whenever I take the step forward to do His work and use His word to bless others. See you at the 24/7 prayer wave in 2005! • 2004 Healing of Cancer

2004 Testifying to God's Goodness HEALING FROM GOD Zhang Kui Hua I was born in East Asia. For many years, I was taught that there was no God and that mankind evolved from the apes. This theory was deeply rooted in me. At the age of 26 years last year, 1 became a devout Buddhist when I was diagnosed with cancer. After surgery, the cancer cells spread to my lungs and liver. Chemotherapy did not help. Subsequently, I underwent three other operations. You may also like Share Testimony 2005 Celebrate Living Stones' 5th Anniversary 2016 The Safe Place Mandarin Service Each month, the results of my monthly check-up would be worse than the month before. My family sought a renowned fortune teller, venerated as "god", to save me from an untimely death. This “god” was very accurate in telling me what had happened in my past and we were totally convinced. My family spent a lot of money on him to free me from this crisis. Somehow, the Lord led me back to Singapore for chemotherapy. The doctor's prognosis was very negative and I was told not to hold too much hope. However, a miracle happened! After four sessions of chemotherapy, the cancer cells were under control. My coughing and breathlessness reduced greatly. Nevertheless, I was depressed because the chemotherapy and room rental costs were very high and I did not wish to burden others. I cried almost everyday. By then, I had become terribly skinny. I often asked my sister why “Lao Tian Ye” ("the gods”) allowed this big “crisis” to happen to me. “Why does my family have to suffer this way? Why? Why?" Just as I was about to give up and leave Singapore, God, our Heavenly Father sent a Christian sister, Wang Di, to share the Good News with me. I came to know Jesus and the Bible cleared all my doubts. I realized that it is the Almighty God who created mankind. And it is Satan, the devil, who caused harm to my body. On 28 August 2004, Daniel Ho came to visit me and shared about God with me. I accepted Christ as my Lord. Immediately my life was transformed. I stopped crying every day. I was no longer angry but was filled with joy and peace. I really thank God for His great power; He sent brothers and sisters to support and help me financially, mentally and emotionally. Their prayers built me up in my faith. Sister Bee Bee brought me to the healing school and translated for me. Pastor Tony Cameneti laid hands and prayed for me. I felt a warmth flow through my body and in the areas where I felt pain, I sensed some kind of heat. Praise the Lord and all glory to Him! I believe I am completely healed. His great power was at work in me. On 5 October 2004, I went for an X-ray of my lungs. It was really great news! My lungs showed only one-third of the white spots (an indication that the cancer is receding). Hallelujah! Praise the Lord for giving me a new lease of life. I was given only six months to live, but now, after one year, I am still alive and I believe I am healed. Now I am filled with hope for the future and I will live well - testifying for God, so that those who have not yet put their trust in God will be saved. • 2004 Mae Sot, Thailand

2004 Mae Sot, Thailand A Deep Sense Of Calling John Lim On my return flight from Thailand on Monday, 25 October 2004, an article in the inflight magazine caught my eye. It was on the “loi kratong" festival. I had a sudden sense of nostalgia as I recalled that it was on this festival day last year that we arrived in Bangkok and met up with Pastor Prasert, the Director for the Methodist Missions Society in Thailand. Time flies. In the wink of an eye, a full year has passed since the day the pastor-in-charge of Rangsit Methodist Church, Pastor Chumnan, came to share with us about RMC during our LCEC meeting. PLMC decided to adopt this church as our partner in Thailand because of our shared vision of developing RMC into a cell church. It was in November 2003 that Mary, our Missions Director, and I flew to Rangsit to sign the Memorandum of Understanding for this partnership. Even before we went to sign the MOU, I made a personal trip to the slump areas and villages in Rangsit to meet the church members. We had fellowship with a family of believers in a broken zinc hut as we worshipped and feasted on the uncemented floor. My heart was burdened for them and I had that deep sense of calling to bring the light of the gospel to these people. I was eager to take on the responsibility of this ministry on behalf of our church. During one of the conversations, the pastor of RMC challenged me to commit to visiting them monthly. I gladly said yes without giving a second thought. Ever since then, I have been going up to RMC to teach and minister to the church members on every fourth Sunday of the month. As the work continued, I became more and more committed as I grew to know the RMC members. I have been joined by other teams from PLMC who go to Rangsit to teach, train and develop the members in the Word of God. They are very committed to learning His word and have been sharing and spreading the gospel to their families, neighbours, friends and colleagues. RMC has come a long way and today, the ministries of the church include evangelism to youths at the University Campus. Rattana, Pastor Satit's wife, is in charge of the Children's ministry and they also have a Junior Boys' Brigade Company. In our partnership plan for 2005, PLMC's Missions Committee will provide more training and teaching for both young and old, new and mature believers, to encourage and equip them for service. Please pray for me and the Missions committee, as well as the members, staff, pastor and leaders of RMC, for the continued strength and obedience to be used and led by God for the work in Thailand. We all strive to exalt His Name above the heavens and bring the light of His gospel to the land of Thailand. I would also like to express my thanks for the support of our church pastors, the Missions committee and the members of the G18 group in this area of ministry. 2004 72nd Anniversary Celebrating the Greatest Gift It was a joyous Sunday on the 11 July 2004 as we celebrated our 72nd anniversary. As we gathered as the family of God at PLMC to remember His goodness and faithfulness, there was a sense of unity and oneness among us. Indeed, God has blessed us richly over the years and the occasion was an opportunity for us to bless over 300 of our guests from Serangoon Central by sharing with them the greatest gift of God's love. You may also like Share Testimony 2004 A Season of Prayer 1982 50th Anniversary 2000s We also praise God for the 22 adults and 30 children who accepted the greatest gift of Jesus as their Lord and Saviour at our anniversary celebration. Through the vibrant worship, the choir anthem proclaiming that “God is good all the time”; the touching rendition of “When You Believe” by the youth choir; and the message of God's love and salvation, the Holy Spirit touched the hearts of many of our guests. 2004 Seed of Kindness Read more about the testimonies of salvation and how God touched the hearts of His people during the anniversary service. Celebrating The Greatest Gift An Act Of Kindness That Has Lasted A Lifetime Among the over 3,000 church members and guests that Sunday morning was one man who has always held our church dear to his heart. Over 60 years ago, the pastor of PLMC had done a simple act of kindness for Mr Lingam, a resident of block 205, which he has not forgotten to this day. Mr Lingam told his story to Lim Lian Arn and his wife, Chai Yuan, as they accompanied him to our church for the anniversary service. It happened during the second world war, in 1942. Families could only receive food rations by showing their food ration card. One day, Mr Lingam's mother told the family the disastrous news, that the family's ration card was lost! As a desperate last resort, Mr Lingam appealed to our church for help. Without hesitation, the then pastor of PLMC wrote a petition to the authorities and the family received a new food ration card. To this day, Mr Lingam keeps that precious memento of our church's act of humanity. Over the years, he has seen PLMC grow and has even walked around our church grounds. That anniversary Sunday was the first time he ever entered our sanctuary. He was amazed at the service, the worship, the people and the love that he felt. After the service, he told Lian Arn and Chai Yuan that he would like to come back to our church regularly. "He will be saved, he will receive Christ. The seed was sown 62 years ago, and now the time has come for us to nourish it and watch it grow ," said Lian Arn. “We may not all reap but we must all sow the seeds of God's love and His Word. Sometimes it's just a simple act of kindness, of love. So brothers and sisters, let's continue to sow! " Sowing Seeds Of Friendship "In addition to Mr Lingam, two other residents who were invited by Friends 1 & 2 cell groups, led by Lian Arn and myself, came to attend our services again the following Sunday. Linda and Mrs Alice Liang from block 205 came to attend our Mandarin Service. We praise God for opening their hearts to His love!” said lan Cheah, cell leader. Giving Their Hearts to Jesus The anniversary service was a doubly joyous occasion for Anthony Chew as he celebrated our church anniversary and more importantly, his mother's salvation. “I have been praying for many years for my mother's salvation. Finally, at our anniversary service, my prayer was answered!” said Anthony. His mother, who is 66 years old, was a Buddhist, although she would sometimes attend Novena or other churches with her friends. Three days before our anniversary service, Anthony called his mother and invited her to attend the celebration. She agreed. On that Sunday, Anthony went with his cell group to invite the residents from Serangoon Central to attend the service. When they arrived at the Sanctuary, his mother went to sit behind his cell group members and their guests. “When Rev Wee invited those who wanted to accept Jesus as their Lord and Saviour to indicate their decision, my mother tapped me from behind. She had stood up in response to the altar call. We encouraged her to go to the front to be prayed for. Praise the Lord for her salvation!” You may also like Share Testimony 2004 A Season of Prayer 1982 50th Anniversary 2000s

  • 1997 Thanksgiving Stones

1997 Thanksgiving Thanksgiving Stones Jonathan Seet Pastor, PLMC A line in an old Christian song goes like this: Remember. I’m human and humans forget so remind me, remind me dear Lord. I believe that it is because of our propensity to forget God that God through His prophets require His people to set up memorials to His goodness. In 1 Samuel 7:12, the prophet Samuel set up the Ebenezer stone (meaning stone of help) to remind the people of how the Lord had helped them defeat the Philistines. You may also like Share Testimony 1998 Coming Home 2008 Church Bell Dedication 1990s Joshua chapter 3 & 4 tells us how God stopped the flow of the River Jordan to enable the people of Israel to cross it to enter the Promised Land. Joshua then instructed the people to retrieve stones from the river and set them up as a memorial to God. The Bible records that “These stones will remind the people of what the Lord has done. In the future, when your children ask what these stones mean to you, you will tell them that the water of the River Jordan stopped flowing. Tell them the Lord your God dried up the water of the Jordan for you until you had crossed, just as He dried up the Red Sea for us. Because of this everyone on earth will know how great the Lord’s power is and you will honour the Lord forever.” Joshua 4: 6-7, 23-24. These are some instances when people used stones as memorials unto God. In our new church building, we are setting aside the space between the Covenant Centre and the Church Sanctuary to be our Thanksgiving Plaza. We are giving people the opportunity to set up their own thanksgiving stones. Each stone is to be set up as a memorial of God’s goodness and help. We believe that this is the first time that such an opportunity has ever been given. This chance to lay a thanksgiving stone may never come again once all the stones in the Plaza have been taken up. The stones are not only for the worshippers of Paya Lebar Methodist Church, we are inviting Christians everywhere to come and join us in making this Plaza a Thanksgiving unto God. Anyone can set up one stone or more. We will allow the request for stones from more than one person to be placed side by side each other’s. However, the location of stones or sets of stones in the Plaza will on a random basis and not on personal choice. We would like each stone to be accompanied by a testimony and these testimonies will be compiled into a book for public reading. So come, let’s remember the Lord’s goodness and faithfulness and let us set up STONES WHICH WILL CRY OUT IN PRAISE! IN THANKSGIVING! IN REMEMBRANCE! Great of Thy faithfulness Lord unto me. You may also like Share Testimony 1998 Coming Home 2008 Church Bell Dedication 1990s
