1997 Thanksgiving Stones Jonathan Seet Pastor, PLMC A line in an old Christian song goes like this: Remember. I’m human and humans forget so remind me, remind me dear Lord. I believe that it is because of our propensity to forget God that God through His prophets require His people to set up memorials to His goodness. In 1 Samuel 7:12 , the prophet Samuel set up the Ebenezer stone (meaning stone of help) to remind the people of how the Lord had helped them defeat the Philistines. Joshua chapter 3 & 4 tells us how God stopped the flow of the River Jordan to enable the people of Israel to cross it to enter the Promised Land. Joshua then instructed the people to retrieve stones from the river and set them up as a memorial to God. You may also like Share Testimony 1998 Coming Home 2008 Church Bells Dedication 1990s The Bible records that “These stones will remind the people of what the Lord has done. In the future, when your children ask what these stones mean to you, you will tell them that the water of the River Jordan stopped flowing. Tell them the Lord your God dried up the water of the Jordan for you until you had crossed, just as He dried up the Red Sea for us. Because of this everyone on earth will know how great the Lord’s power is and you will honour the Lord forever.” Joshua 4: 6-7, 23-24 . These are some instances when people used stones as memorials unto God. In our new church building, we are setting aside the space between the Covenant Centre and the Church Sanctuary to be our Thanksgiving Plaza. We are giving people the opportunity to set up their own thanksgiving stones. Each stone is to be set up as a memorial of God’s goodness and help. We believe that this is the first time that such an opportunity has ever been given. This chance to lay a thanksgiving stone may never come again once all the stones in the Plaza have been taken up. The stones are not only for the worshippers of Paya Lebar Methodist church, we are inviting Christians everywhere to come and join us in making this Plaza a Thanksgiving unto God. Anyone can set up one stone or more. We will allow the request for stones from more than one person to be placed side by side each other’s. However, the location of stones or sets of stones in the Plaza will no on a random basis and not on personal choice. We would like each stone to be accompanied by a testimony and these testimonies will be compiled into a book for public reading. So come, let’s remember the Lord’s goodness and faithfulness and let us set up STONES WHICH WILL CRY OUT IN PRAISE! IN THANKSGIVING! IN REMEMBRANCE! Great of Thy faithfulness Lord unto me. - 2007 Vision of Filipino Fellowship
2007 Vision of Filipino Fellowship To be a community of passionate and matured Filipinos, effective for Christ in Singapore and the nations. Rev Lorna Khoo This vision has been the guiding principle of the Filipino Fellowship (FF) and has never been more relevant than in this 75th Anniversary year of PLMC. The ministry of equipping and building up the FF members and sending them out as effective ambassadors of reconciliation for Christ's kingdom is even older than PLMC's 123Go! missions vision. By leaving their homeland, the FF members have taken the first step in their journey of faith, trusting in God for everything, including provision and protection in an unfamiliar land. For them, they have already been "sent out”. Although their initial motivation for leaving the Philippines was probably an economic one, there is no doubt that God's plan for our FF members are being fulfilled in Singapore. Many who joined the FF have seen their lives transformed and changed by the power of the Holy Spirit. Very often, we not only see their lives transformed, but they will bring back their new-found obedience in a faithful God when they return home. In fact, even the lives of their employers and their families can benefit from them. Often, we do not realize the potential power they have as our “missionaries from within” as they live and work with Singaporean families who may not have come into the saving grace of God. They have the opportunity to influence the families they work with, the young children who depend on them or the elderly under their care. They are living testimonies of God's goodness in their lives - up close and very, very personal. They can be blessings to others because they have first been blessed. - WSCS | 2006 God Provided Labourers
2006 God Provided Labourers WSCS Annual General Meeting, 22 July 2006 Mrs Doris Wong Advisor, WSCS Two Sundays before the WSCS Annual General Meeting, Choo Lai Eng, President of WSCS, said to me in jest that the ministry may have to "close down” as very few ladies were coming forward to serve. Although I just smiled and said nothing, I was also a little anxious. At the same time, I knew that God would never let us down; not when He had seen us through 74 good years at PLMC. I thought to myself that it could be a period of testing of our faith and trust in the Lord. So I claimed God's promise in Proverbs 3:5-6.“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him and He will direct your paths.” As sure as the sun rises, our prayers for the Lord to raise up godly women from among us, who are committed to the women ministry in PLMC, were answered. And very timely too! Our AGM was indeed a fruitful one. Not only were all the positions filled, we even had enough ladies stepping forward to serve to form a resource and "backup pool”. We praise and thank the Lord for His faithfulness. How I Was Called To The WSCS Cathryn Sim I was a Church School teacher for 10 years, before taking a “sabbatical” in 2005. I wanted to wait upon the Lord to direct me to another ministry for the "next 10 years”. During that whole year, God allowed me to be involved in many short-term events in social concerns and missions. Through an invitation by Lai Eng, God opened the door for me to sit as a committee member of the WSCS in July 2005. As I served the Lord in small ways, I found myself surrounded by a group of wonderful, committed and matured sisters in Christ - Sally, Lillian and Doris, just to name a few. Their enthusiasm and faithfulness in serving the Lord over the past many years overwhelmed me. I wondered why I did not get to know them earlier?! My passion is to see marriages revived, husbands taking up spiritual leadership at home, and families “on fire” for the Lord. On Lai Eng's suggestion that I should help in Discipleship and Nurture in the WSCS, I took on the role of assisting Gui Mei. My involvement slowly increased in 2006, when I was “volunteered” to be the worship leader on WSCS Sunday, attended a leadership course conducted by GC-WSCS and represented Lai Eng at the TRAC-WSCS annual meeting. In June 2006, by faith, I helped in a 13-week course, “More Precious Than Jewels”, which had 100 participants, some of whom were pre-believers! Praise God for that! I would like to encourage all ladies at PLMC with this truth – “When God calls, He equips. When He equips, He empowers.” To God be all glory, honour and praise! Amen! Cathryn was elected as the Vice President of the WSCS at the AGM on 22 July 2006. I praise God that I have come back to Christ again. In the two years that I have worshipped at PLMC, my life has been transformed. When I suffered tremendous hair loss due to stress and an illness, I lost my confidence and “sunk” into darkness. Prayer gave me hope, the Holy Spirit gave me strength and God's Word gave me courage. The Lord reminded me to worship Him alone and He would deliver me from my troubles. Praise God, I recovered my hair and my health. From then, I truly acknowledged that God is omnipotent and omniscient. He can do all things when I believe and ask of Him. After this incident, my faith grew deeper. However, I then faced the most difficult decision of my life. As I was divorced from my former husband, who is from a different religion, I realised that if I were to openly say that I was now a Christian, I may lose my son forever. It was then that the Lord reminded me of Abraham, and how he was willing to sacrifice his beloved son, the key to all that God wanted to bless him with, out of love for the Lord. It was, therefore, with much pain in my heart that I went through baptism and openly confessed Christ as my Lord and Saviour. Although I love my son so deeply, I have taken that step of faith to love God more. I am convicted that the Lord will take care of my son. 2011 First AV Ministry Retreat Soh Fong Jin The first AV Ministry retreat was held on Saturday, 13 August, at the Chapel. Twenty-five members from Projection (Live and Post), Photography, and Sound attended. Everyone had a blessed time during the Worship, Word, Work segments as well as the 'Durian Fellowship' where all enjoyed the fruit of their labour. At the individual level, members were encouraged by the prophetic message and drawing prepared by Anna, and Rev Seet's sharing gave us a better understanding of the Church's direction. - Cell Group | 2011 Cell Blessing Elderly Home
2011 Cell Blessing Elderly Home Reach Out and Touch Shushan Lau Love sprang into action last Christmas for our cell group. We organised a simple party for the elderly residents, mostly dementia patients, and staff of the Econ Nursing Home at Buangkok. Susan, our cell member, had wanted to reach out to the mostly Buddhist Myanmese nursing staff ever since her father became a resident a few years ago. So when it was time for the usual “open cell” where pre-believing friends are invited for food and fellowship and the Good News is shared, our cell decided it was time to reach out to our community. It was also a good platform to invite pre-believing friends to be involved in the organising, and thus, build more intimate relationships with them. We discovered that many, whether believers or not, want to do “good”. So, we roped in our siblings, nephews and nieces, domestic helpers, and friends. Together we sang carols, helped to serve food, distributed gift packs and tracts in the Myanmese language and shared the meaning of Christmas. The songs, accompanied by simple clappers, bells and castanets, and games brought much cheer and celebration-a welcome respite from the monotony of the daily institutional routine. Chye tau kway, tau huay, muffins, and fruits were a "bonus" for the residents. We were told these were "hard to come by”. The fellowship gave us many opportunities for interaction. A few residents were moved to tears by our presence. You may also like Share Testimony 2011 The Cost and Commitment of Community Outreach Cell Group Receiving While Blessing In bringing festive cheer to the elderly residents, our cell members felt blessed too, for truly “it is more blessed to give than to receive.” (Acts 20:35) This event helped to forge the spirit of unity and renew a sense of purpose in the cell. It was also an opportunity for God to His gifting of talents in each cell member. We discovered multi-lingual comperes with a flair for entertaining, music lovers who led in the carol singing, and creative sparks behind the preparation of invitation e-cards, Powerpoint slides with English and Chinese translations. We learnt what it meant to be one in the body of Christ. We were also encouraged when the Myanmese nurses invited their friends from other homes for the event. They taught us how to cook Myanmese dishes and asked that we start our meals with the Christian prayer! Loving More and More Since then, we have continued to visit during the Lunar New Year, Easter, and the dumpling festival to further foster relationships with the nurses and residents of the home. They are always receptive and look forward to our visits. Our cell members put in much effort for each visit. It isn't always smooth sailing though. We had to overcome the initial fear of organising such a large scale event (30 residents, up to 10 nurses) with the necessary funds and logistics. Language is an obstacle, especially in one-to-one conversation. Some residents doze off during the activities, and since they suffer from dementia, some aren't always aware of what is going on. The Myanmese nurses are often rotated and may leave the country, so it isn't easy to build lasting friendships. On one occasion, a Catholic Indian resident was upset as he perceived we were trying to convert him. Yet, we press on because these old folks need loving. They are not just “people waiting for their time to come”. Recently, the nurses asked if we would be coming back. How could we not? God's love compels us. Shushan Lau leads the 1 Vox cell group. Beginning as an all-ladies group, it has expanded to include husbands and couples as well. You may also like Share Testimony 2011 The Cost and Commitment of Community Outreach Cell Group
- Youth Service | 2006 TNG Season of Worship
2006 TNG Season of Worship The Reason For Our Being Alan Fong and Josephine Liardon The Season of Worship (SOW), organised by the The Next Generation (TNG) in the month of September 2006, was born out of a desire to put God back at the centre of our lives. All too often in our lives, whether it is in school, the workplace or even in ministry, our priorities become misplaced. SOW was a dedicated season for all the youths of TNG to once again declare that the reason for our being is to worship Him and enjoy His Presence. The SOW publicity poster shouted: "Prepare for a month of heart stomping, heart throbbing, soul grapping season of worship!" And indeed, it was a month-long event of special programmes, held over several Saturdays, which included “Face Down Worship”; worship led by songwriter Brent Chambers and his son, Nathan; and “Radical Worship Transformed Lives”. The youths were also encouraged to express their worship through creative means such as music, media, dance and song writing. In addition, a worship retreat was held for the worship and music ministry team. You may also like Share Testimony 2008 TNG Official Launch Worship & Music Ministry Youth Service “True Worship Transforms Lives” Pastor Barnabas Chong opened the SOW month with this key understanding. The youth were challenged to know God more intimately in creative ways, besides singing and music. To illustrate this, an old African worship song “Kum Baya” was creatively expressed in a contemporary dance piece, collaborated by 3 voices and a musician, at one of the TNG services. None of the team really understood the exact meaning of the phrase until it was explained that it was how the African slaves pronounced “Come By Us, Lord”. We were pleasantly surprised at the exact meaning of the song as it echoed the cry and desire of all of us at TNG for the Lord to "Come by Us”. As Allan led the corporate prayer in that same service, he prayed the same phrase without knowing that the song would be performed at the service. Those of us who were preparing for the worship presentation felt our hearts strangely touched. We realised that when we place our gifts in the spirit of serving and worship, the Lord blesses our gifts of worship. At the TNG worship retreat, held on 16 - 17 September 2006, the TNG musicians were blessed with the ministry of Brent Chambers and his son, Nathan. Brent shared about what attracts God's presence and what we can do to get it. He said that God blesses those whose hearts are pure. One of the youth participants who attended was challenged about being responsible with our TIME, especially in the area of punctuality. Punctuality reflects our respect for others as it means that we consider that their time is as valuable as ours, and we need to honour God by honouring others. To emphasize the fact that intimacy with God is about setting aside time to know Him more intimately, and that it involves a partnership, the closing service of the SOW month featured a specially commissioned Latin dance entitled “Songs of Songs- My Beloved is Mine and I Am His”. The choice of dance style was deliberately chosen to express the way God feels towards us, His passion and His Love. The dance team of adults and youths were not only taught the routine, but learnt spiritual principles of commitment, determination, trust and discipline as they mastered the challenging piece. The experience reflects our relationship with our Father God, who is our eternal "dance partner” and choreographer of our lives. He is gentle, patient and kind even when we stumble, fall and make mistakes in this partnership; He forgives and waits patiently, eagerly. This was one of the final lessons impressed upon the participants, and to all who will appreciate and enjoy this partnership with God - a testimony of the commitment of Christ towards His Church, His Bride, for He loved His Church and died for her. Throughout the SOW month, a group of youths also gathered at 6.15 am every Saturday to pray and intercede for our youths and our church. SOW has definitely been a positive experience and for many, this was the first time they worshipped with such earnestness and passion. God's Presence made all the difference. And at each TNG service, many youths responded by making choices to live a life pleasing to God. Indeed, many were blessed during the SOW as they learnt that worship is not only about music but it is a lifestyle of singing and speaking praises to God, of active obedience – listening with our ears and serving with our hands and feet. To God be the Glory. “SOW has been a great experience for me, I learnt the true essence of worship and I returned to the heart of worship. It's a great opportunity for the entire congregation, regardless of age, to fully comprehend and grasp what true worship really is all about, that it's not about music or getting the so-called “high”, that at the end of the day, it really is all about God. The spiritual climate has been awesome, I could really feel God moving and touching hearts while we worshipped. I think God is raising up a new generation of leaders, who truly have a passion for Him. When it comes to serving God,"heart" is a crucial factor and when we truly love God, we would want to obey Him, to serve Him with passion so that our service may be pleasing to Him. When young people set their minds on doing something, they go all out to do it. If they serve God with the same intensity and passion with which they do everything else, God would be able to work mightily in Singapore." - Testimony by Sharon, TNG leader You may also like Share Testimony 2008 TNG Official Launch Worship & Music Ministry Youth Service
- 1980s | 1982 50th Anniversary
1982 50th Anniversary Entering the New Year with Hope Rev Dr Kang Ho Soon Pastor, PLMC 1982 is a special year for Paya Lebar Methodist Church. It marks the end of a 50-year period and we celebrating the Church's Golden Anniversary with different programmes throughout the year. It also ushers new era as the Church enters into the next 50-year period and looks forward to celebrating its centenary in the year 2032. Another reason why I think 1982 is significant for our Church is because we will be having a New Sanctuary which will be completed sometime in October. To me, this New Sanctuary is a symbol of something which we need all the time. It is a symbol of Christian Hope. It points to God who is: "Our help in ages past, Our hope for years to come, Our shelter from the stormy blast, And our eternal home!" It is knowing that God has not forsaken His world, that He still loves the world as much as He first created it and later sent His Son to die for it. Rev Abel Hendricks, twice president of the Methodist Church in South Africa, widely known for his won for Christian justice and liberation of all people, and last year's recipient of the World Methodist Peace Award, said in his recent lecture on "One Hope': "Christian hope is rooted in God's activity and presence in the world. It is eschatological..... it is an outgrowth of Christian faith..... ..... it is God's offer to man and it makes life worthwhile. It is making an appointment with the future that is wrapped up in the past and unveiling itself in the present." This Hope is not something we can seize upon on our own; it is not something we can earn or buy or even pray that we possess it. You cannot demand hope of God or other people; Hope can only be given – God can only give you hope and you can only give hope to others. When those close to us (be they family members, neighbours, or Church members) do not have much hope, the reason may be because we have failed to give them any. It calls for an investment of ourselves in the lives and struggles of others. Hope is the thing we give each other in life, one of those precious elements that can only be given away and not taken from. As we enter the new year, May God continue to grant us hope, may Paya Lebar Methodist Church be a symbol of hope to the community, and may we individually give hope to the lives we touch daily. Agape, which refers to God's love, was chosen as a symbolic rest for these workers, who are often hard pressed for time. The Agape Fellowship seeks to be a place where they can rest, seek, and experience God's love. Last Christmas, which fell on a Sunday, saw a total of 58 guests participate in the celebration, an Unexpected turnout from 40 registrants. With God's divine providence and lead, both food and gifts turned out to be sufficient, concluding the celebration with activities, games, ukelele performances and songs. You may also like Share Testimony 2018 Agape Fellowship Outreach Mandarin Service Agape Fellowship, Lantern Making 爱加倍小站事工:祝福他人, 活出爱 In anticipation for Chinese New Year, the Agape Fellowship held a Lantern Making session to bless the elders of the Chang Qing Cell Group. - Youth Service | 2018 Youth Sunday
2018 Youth Sunday Caitlin Foo 2018 marks the 10th year that the Youth Service has been in worshipping at the PLMGSS Agape Concert Hall. We took the opportunity to celebrate God’s faithfulness with our Youth Sunday celebrations on 22 July. This is the third year the Youth Ministry is holding the Youth Sunday event, where the service is organised and executed by the youth themselves, and mentored by spiritual leaders for the youth. The theme of this year’s celebrations was “Tenacity”, based on 1 Corinthians 15:58, “Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labour in the Lord is not in vain.” The theme was derived after the youth leaders prayed over this event. We were convicted that God was encouraging young people to build an immovable and tenacious faith. We kicked off the occasion with the camp flash mob, a dance that was choreographed for the recent youth camp, Camp Citadel. This was followed by a time of worship. A youth choir was specially put together to lead alongside the worship band. Our Pastor-In-Charge, Pastor Jonathan Seet, prayed over the Youth Ministry, thanking God for His providence for the past decade and declared open heavens. Pastor Wendy Tay shared about personal responsibility as a city of refuge for others and work that needs to be done. You may also like Share Testimony 1988 Launch of Cell Group Ministry 2020 YA Beginning the Year with God Youth Service After we welcomed the newcomers, we engaged in a Kahoot quiz, led by Nicole and Jolene Sia. The quiz tested the youth on how well they knew the Youth Ministry, and the fastest fingers won. Following the laughter and competitiveness, it was time to calm down to hear God’s word. Rachel Loh, Bernice Toh and myself went to share about the message of Tenacity. I shared the background of how the theme was derived, while Bernice and Rachel shared their respective definitions of “tenacity” , which were “highly retentive”, “holding fast”, and “holding together”. The crux of the message was that as youth, there are many trials and distractions that we face, but the answer to all of them is to stay rooted in Christ Jesus. This comes in the form of building a firm foundation in His word, and spurring one another on to do good work. This meaning was further expressed through a dance choreographed by Crystal Tan and Beatrice Hew. The dance encapsulated how we, the church, are called to be the “hands and feet” of Jesus, and to “be the difference that we’re called to be.” Following the dance, the congregation was divided into their respective age groups, or clusters. They were encouraged to write down their individual hopes and dreams for the ministry, then pray collectively as a group. The prayers were displayed on stage, and representatives of each cluster came on stage to say a prayer of declaration over the generation. The celebrations concluded with a carnival, which included snacks, and a variety of games that were prepared by the youth leaders and older cell groups. It was a wonderful experience watching the older youth caring for the younger. Truly, God delights when we invest in the generation that comes after us. We give glory to the Lord, who has been the cornerstone of this ministry, and we thank Him for the work He continues to do among us. - 2004 Miracle Healing
2004 Miracle Healing Praise The Lord, I Can Hear! Ronald Koh For as long as I can remember, I have been stone deaf in my left ear. "Legally deaf” was how the army classified it in their records during my National Service days. The only sound I could hear in that ear was a low frequency booming noise. I had previously prayed for healing at services where we were asked to pray with our hand placed over the infirmed area. However, it was only at the Ministry Training session that I received divine healing from the Lord. It was very clear to me that the presence of the Lord was with all of us that Saturday at the training session held on 24 April 2004. Before the session on healing, had been talking to another participant, Doreen, and had instinctively tilted my head so that my functioning right ear was in her direction. When Lorinne invited those of us who wanted healing to come forward, I responded spontaneously. I asked my cell members to come up with me to pray for me. There was no "supernatural" phenomena like being slain, but I received the promise of healing by faith. When I went back to my seat after being prayed for by my cell members, Doreen was talking to Violet and me. I suddenly realised that I could hear her very clearly from where I was sitting. I did not have to angle my head with my right ear towards her to hear her. I could actually hear her with my left ear! Praise the Lord for the miracle of healing in me!! I had attended the Ministry Training session before, but decided to join my cell members who were attending the session to encourage and support them. I am glad I did, or I would not have had the opportunity to respond in faith, to be touched by God's healing hand. I realise that God wants us to respond to Him in a visible way, to be a visible witness for Him, and to testify of His goodness to encourage others. 2019 YA Christmas Homecoming Michelle Leong Held on 14 December 2019 at Jordan Hall, the Christmas Homecoming was an evening of thanksgiving and celebration for the Young Adult community together with a few newcomers. A highlight that evening was a large thanksgiving Christmas tree upon which the young adults hung thanksgiving cards after penning down their thanksgiving item for the year. The evening began with a bingo game, where every participant was given a bingo card with various tasks on them. They then had to find other participants who had completed these tasks and ask them to sign their cards. The person who collected the most signatures in the quickest time won the game. Everyone had fun going around the room, asking each other to sign their cards and getting to know each other better. Dinner was followed by a series of team games. The participants were split into 4 teams, and each team had to complete a relay race involving various challenges, such as throwing a ping pong ball into a cup, flipping and catching a bunch of chopsticks, and partnering a team member to hoist and carry a can across the room with a stick of spaghetti. This was followed by a sharing by Pastor Alex, who reminded the community that in the spirit of thanksgiving, we celebrate the goodness of God in our lives and reflect on the importance of giving thanks to God in all circumstances. The event ended with a round of caroling by our church choral group, G Major, who led us through singing all-time favourite Christmas carols such as Carol of the Bells, Hark the Herald Angels Sing and Joy to the World. This transited into a time of candlelight carolling with participants holding candles and passing the flame from one candle to another. All in all, it was a wonderful night where the young adults came together as a community to bond with each other, reflect on God’s goodness and give thanks to Him for His many blessings in our lives and in our community. It aimed to reach out to our fellow Filipinos and broadcast that there is a vibrant community of Filipinos in PLMC that they can connect with. This was also an opportunity to introduce and promote the upcoming Filipino Service, which will be launched on 14 January 2018, 1:30 pm at the Covenant Chapel. There was a food corner where everyone could enjoy a variety of goodies including some Filipino dishes. One of the popular spots was the videoke/ karaoke corner where they could sing their hearts out. But my personal favorite was the prophetic art booth, where friends from the Prophetic Art Ministry connected with and prayed over the participants and helped them hear from the Lord. The event was greatly blessed by the strong support of the PLMC church office team and invaluable help from our Singaporean brothers and sisters in PLMC – from sponsoring food, manning the booths and helping with all the logistics. We all felt a great sense of unity amongst family. Our heartfelt thanks to each one of them. It was a tiring day for most of us, but it was nothing compared to the joy that we felt, knowing that God’s presence was with us all throughout the event – from planning to its completion. I believe that from here, God will open many doors of opportunity for PLMC to reach out to, not just Filipinos, but to many more people of different races and languages, and to be the safe space to all God’s people.
