1989 How Computers Benefited Visually Impaired
Albert Toh
Society today is well entrenched in the computer age. We see computers everywhere - covering almost every aspect of everyday life. However, in all these advances, technology for the visually impaired tended to lag behind. Although there were speech synthesizers available to help visually impaired people gain access to the world of computers, further technological advances was needed to make computer-generated information even more readily accessible to them. With the advent of the Eureka A4, we are one step closer to realizing this dream.

But what, you may ask, is the Eureka A4 all about?
This unique and versatile piece of equipment is actually a personal computer that has been specially designed for the visually impaired. The visually impaired refer to it as their Electronic Secretary. An obvious feature that seem to be amiss is that it has no screen and you may be wondering how the visually impaired user interacts with the Eureka.

Note Taker: For taking notes during lectures, meetings, tele- phone conversations, etc;
Word Processor: A professional, powerful Word-Processor for writing reports, letters and even books which can then be printed out on either a standard inkprint printer or braille embosser. In fact, this article was prepared with the aid of the Eureka word processor.
Diary: A reminder for all forthcoming appointments;
Alarm Clock & Calendar: Time and date keeping functions supplemented by a stop watch and a countdown timer;
Scientific Calculator: A general purpose calculator incorporating scientific functions;
Telephone Modem: Access to computer networks and databases via telephone;
Telephone Directory: To store telephone numbers and addresses. It has an automatic telephone dialer;
Basic Interpreter: Allows for basic programming;
Music Composer: Allows the composition of music for serious work or entertainment.
These are but some of the features available on the Eureka which are very useful..
Designed and produced in Australia, the Eureka A4 has helped many visually impaired people in their everyday life. Students have been using it for their assignments. Our full-time Church Worker uses it to prepare the weekly Order of Worship in Braille and other printed materials. Visually impaired tele phonists now have a faster means of accessing telephone numbers and addresses. Computer enthusiasts can now write Basic programmes as well as machine language programmes. Its potentials seem unlimited. It is the visually impaired who must use his initiative to exploit its potential to the fullest.
The only limitation is its cost. A single unit cost A$2,700/-. This makes it beyond the reach of most visually impaired people. Since the Eureka A4 opens up many new opportunities for the visually impaired in education and employ ment, please pray with us that God will provide the funds so that more visually impaired people can benefit from it.
